Background & Role


Applications are invited from enthusiastic and suitably qualified individuals for this 23-month fixed term contract as a postdoctoral researcher at the School of Health and Human Performance. This position is available from June 2025. This role offers a unique opportunity to investigate perceptions, experiences, and attitudes to sleep, fatigue, and wellbeing during the postpartum period in Ireland. It will also involve the development of a bespoke intervention to educate first-time parents about positive sleep health and wellbeing practices during the postpartum period (i.e., up to 12 months’ postpartum).


The post is based on the Glasnevin Campus of Dublin City University and the appointee will report to the Principal Investigator.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not restricted to, the following: 

  • Contribute to the research programme under general guidance of the Principal Investigator and wider research team
  • Assist the PI and research group in the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of the research programme
  • Lead the data collection and analysis of both quantitative and qualitative research
  • Assist the PI in the management / co-ordination of key aspects of the research programme (e.g. financial management, reporting, equipment management etc.)
  • Liaise with all academic researchers, knowledge users, public and patient involvement (PPI) contributors and key stakeholders, as required
  • Lead the research project’s academic dissemination including research papers in high-ranking peer reviewed journals
  • Contribute and lead the research projects wider dissemination including presentations, webinars, infographics
  • Support administrative and management tasks associated with the research project
  • Handle any confidential information and data in a sensitive manner
  • Carry out any other duties within scope and purpose of the position as requested by the Principal Investigator


Minimum Criteria

Applicants should have a PhD in one of the following areas: Psychology, Health Psychology, Sleep Health. Experience in health interventions, sleep health, well-being, and/or psychology is desirable.


In addition, it is desirable that the candidate has experience in:


  • Previous experience in mixed methods or qualitative research
  • An emerging record of peer-reviewed publications
  • Be able to take initiative and work under pressure to tight deadlines
  • Excellent written and oral proficiency in English (essential), good communication and interpersonal skills both written and verbal
  • Proven ability to prioritise workload and work to deadlines
  • The self-assurance to take responsibility and be a strong team player who can contribute to the overall success of the team
  • Enthusiastic and structured approach to research and development
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities
  • Background in or knowledge of the postnatal or maternal care


Candidates will be assessed on the following competencies:


Discipline knowledge and Research skills – Demonstrates knowledge of a research discipline and the ability to conduct a specific programme of research within that discipline


Understanding the Research Environment – Demonstrates an awareness of the research environment (for example funding bodies) and the ability to contribute to grant applications


Communicating Research – Demonstrates the ability to communicate their research with their peers and the wider research community (for example presenting at conferences and publishing research in relevant journals) and the potential to teach and tutor students


Managing & Leadership skills - Demonstrates the potential to manage a research project including the supervision of undergraduate students


Essential Training 

The postholder will be required to undertake the following essential compliance training: Orientation, Health & Safety, Data Protection (GDPR) and all Cyber Security Awareness Training. Other training may need to be undertaken when required. 


Salary Scale:

IUA Postdoctoral Researcher Salary Scale: €45,847


Appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and in line with current Government pay policy
