The Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences/Chair of Markets, Competition and Institutions at the University of Potsdam invites applications for the following position limited to three years to be filled as soon as possible:
Academic Staff Member (f/m/d)
ID no. 317/2025
The successful candidate will work 40 hours per week (100 %). The position is classified within remuneration group 13 of the collective wage agreement among the German federal states (“Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst der Länder” – TV-L) and funded by the VolkswagenFoundation, project “Text mining in behavioral economics with a focus on the solution of social dilemma situations”. The fixed term of employment is in accordance with Section 2 subsection 1 of the German Act on Fixed-Term Employment Contracts in Science and Academia (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz or WissZeitVG).
Your Field of Work:
You will be part of a team that jointly explores the opportunities of machine learning/ text mining in behavioral economics (see https://www.uni-potsdam.de/de/vwl-mwi/text-mining). The position offers an attractive research environment: a fully equipped experimental economics lab, facilities for online experiments, generous research funding, and no teaching obligation. The atmosphere in our team is very friendly, cooperative, and honoring. German language skills are an asset but not required.
The Scope of Your Responsibilities:
- Research in the field of behavioral economics
- Web scraping text and other data
- Data analysis using machine learning methods
- Conduction of economic experiments in the lab, online, and/or in the field
Further academic qualification (post-doctoral thesis (Habilitation)) is possible. At least one-third of working hours is available for in-depth academic work.
Your Qualifications:
- Master’s and doctoral degree (thesis at least submitted at the time of employment) in economics, computational linguistics, computer science, psychology, or a neighboring discipline
- Programming skills in Python and/or R
- Strong interest in behavioral economics
- A high level of self-initiative as well as a very reliable and conscientious way of working
We are also looking for the following competences:
- Experience with web scraping
- Experience with text mining
- Experience with running economic experiments online
