Gender gaps remain pervasive in our economies, beginning in the workplace and extending into retirement. Policy interventions play a crucial role in addressing these gaps. This research project takes an innovative approach to understanding gender inequalities in old age, with a focus on the role of pensions and the design of pension systems. The project will evaluate whether a redesigned pension system—including deferred, figurative benefits aimed at increasing mothers' future pensions—affects intra-household bargaining power and decision-making.

By collecting data and conducting policy evaluations, the study will assess the effectiveness of such reforms and their contribution to the reduction of gender gaps over the life-cycle. Germany provides a key case study, where a pension reform increased mothers’ pension wealth by over 4% per child for children born before 1992. This setting will allow for a causal analysis of how pension design influences household decisions, such as portfolio allocation and consumption patterns. Ultimately, this research aims to determine whether pension reforms can contribute to rebalancing power within couples and fostering greater gender equality.
