 Research project or operation 

The person recruited will develop a personal research project in line with the issues developed by the France-Quebec research chair on contemporary issues of freedom of expression (Colibex). A full description of the Chair and its various axes is available online: https://libexpress.hypotheses.org/ 

More specifically, the candidate's work will be part of Axis 2 of the Chair (Religious Beliefs and Identities), coordinated in France by Hanane Karimi (University of Strasbourg, LinCS).

The research project will analyze the boundaries and limits of freedom of religious expression or identity when it comes into conflict with the dominant norms of the affiliation group or society, whether in terms of religious beliefs, gender, race or sexual orientation.

For example, it could focus on :

* freedom of religion, by examining the conditions of its effectiveness

 freedom of expression for religious groups or religious, racial, linguistic or sexual minorities conservative or liberal mobilizations, whether political or community-based, of which these groups are the object

* the effects of public or partisan policies and legislation on minority groups.

* Struggles for recognition of the rights of religious or identity-based minorities


The research may cover any geographical area, without restriction to France and Quebec. It must be in the humanities and social sciences.

 These ideas serve as a basis for the research project proposal, without being exhaustives.

 Activities

  • Description of the research activities :

 The person recruited will benefit from the Colibex Chair framework for scientific activities and international collaborations. 

He/she will carry out personal research work, which may include data collection and analysis, writing original manuscripts, or a combination of these. 

The contract is expected to result in scientific communications and publications, as well as dissemination to a wider audience.

 

  • Related activities : 

 The person recruited will take part in running and promoting the Colibex Chair (contributing to the organization of events, communications, etc.).

 

 

 

 Skills  

  • Qualifications/knowledge : 

 PhD in the humanities and social sciences, preferably in sociology, anthropology or political science.

- Good knowledge of the relevant research field.

- Fluency in French and English.

 

  • Operational skills/expertise : 

 

 - Ability to present research results orally and in writing (communications, publications, etc.).

- Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary and international team.

- Autonomy and good work organization

 Environment and context of work 

  • Presentation of the laboratory/unity :

 Founded on January 1, 2022, the Interdisciplinary Laboratory in Cultural Studies - UMR 7069 LinCS - has set the mission of developing “cultural studies” in France. The three pillars on which LinCS's interdisciplinaritý is based are social and cultural anthropology, sociology and contemporary history. Conceived in constant dialogue with international research newś, this interdisciplinaritý is mobilized around three key themes: embodying (studies of the body and health), altering (the “other” as conceived according to societies, cultures or eras) and deviating (the study of transgressions, relationships to norms or laws).


  • Hierarchical relationship : 

 The successful candidate will be attached to the LinCS laboratory and will work under the supervision of Hanane Karimi. He/she will be part of the collective dynamics of the laboratory and the Colibex Chair. She will work in collaboration with the other French holders of the Chair's axes, Anna Arzoumanov (Sorbonne University), Thibaud Boncourt (Univ. Lyon III) and Thomas Hochmann (Univ. Paris10- Nanterre).

 

  • Special conditions of practice (notice attached): 

 Depending on the focus of his/her research, the successful candidate may be asked to carry out short-term research and development assignments in France and abroad, particularly in Quebec. 

As part of the Chair's activities, the person recruited will be asked to organize (prepare, communicate and manage) scientific events.
