In accordance with the collective agreement for university employees and the Universities Act 2002 (UG), the successful candidate for the six-year, full-time (40 hours per week) tenure-track professorship position must hold a doctorate/PhD. In line with the JKU's policy to support the advancement of women (The Plan to Support the Advancement of Women), the job opening is intended exclusively for female applicants. Based on the successful candidate’s area of expertise, the tenure track professorship will allocated to department at the Faculty of Medicine.

The position is open to highly qualified junior female researchers holding a doctorate/PhD in the engineering or life sciences (computer sciences, bioinformatics, medical technology, etc.) and includes the option of concluding a qualification agreement which could result in a permanent position as Associate Professor (§ 99 para. 5 and 6 of the Austrian Universities Act).

The successful candidate is expected to make the most of existing strengths at the JKU Faculty of Medicine as well as foster cross-faculty collaboration within the JKU - and outside of the JKU - by focusing specifically on the emerging field of artificial intelligence in medicine, and by pooling efforts in this pioneering field.

The candidate should possess a high degree of research expertise in the field of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research and be capable of driving technological research and advances forward, particularly in the field of artificial intelligence in medicine. Moreover, the successful candidate should demonstrate a base-knowledge understanding of medicine and/or a basic understanding of medical processes (such as diagnostics, therapy and preventative medicine) and demonstrate experience in using digital health technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, big data, cloud computing, telemedicine, and in processing and analyzing large sets of medical data, including image and sensor data.

The objective is to not only automate processes and facilitate more accurate diagnoses and individualized treatment plans, but also provide better patient care and follow-up care after an illness. Digital health in medicine is a broad, diverse and interdisciplinary field bringing a variety disciplines together, such as computer science, medicine, biology, and statistics. Developing uniform standards and regulations regarding the use of digital health in medicine will be vital in ensuring that these technologies are safe and effective.

Following the successful completion of a doctorate/Ph.D., the prospective applicant will be expected to demonstrate a record of scholarly activity, outstanding publications, teaching experience, and having successfully acquired external research funding. The candidate’s doctorate/PhD degree should be no older than ten years, whereby career breaks on account of parenting leave, military service, etc. may be deducted.

The minimum annual gross salary in accordance to the collective agreement is EUR 69,060.60. The annual minimum salary under the collective agreement will be raised to EUR 81,314.80 upon concluding a qualification agreement. As part of the appointment negotiations, the final definitive salary will be discussed with the Rector.

When considering a candidate’s background, capabilities, skills, and accomplishments, the JKU takes performance into consideration, meaning that the university understands that academic achievement is inherent to one’s background (such as a reduced employment period, or career interruption on account of care responsibilities, childcare, etc.). In the interest of - and to support - equal opportunity, the candidate’s qualifications are evaluated taking professional background factors, such as academic age, into account.
