Call open for applications for a Post-Doctoral Research Grant, within the framework of project with the reference PTDC/MAT-PUR/4048/2021, financed by Foundation for Science and Technology through National Funds, under the following conditions:
Scientific Area: mathematics
Admission requirements:
ㆍTo have a PhD in mathematics
ㆍThe place of development of the research work to obtain the degree of Doctor complies with the provisions of Regulation no. 950/2019 of 16 December, article 7, paragraph 3, point b), no. 4 and no. 5
Hiring Requirements: If the qualification has been granted by a foreign higher education institution, it will have to be recognized by a Portuguese higher education institution, pursuant to article 25 of Decree-Law No. 66/2018, of 16 August, which approves the regime legal recognition of academic degrees and diplomas in Higher Education, arising from foreign higher education institutions, and paragraph e) of paragraph 2 of article 4 of Decree-Law No. 60/2018, of August 3, all of which the formalities must be fulfilled there until the contracting act.
Activity Outline: The main objective of the study of dynamical systems is to analyze the long-term behavior of evolving systems and their orbits. We are particularly interested in chaotic systems, whose unpredictable evolution appears to be practically random. In many situations, erratic phenomena can be modeled by chaotic dynamical systems, such as the famous Lorenz equations or the Hénon transformations, generally linked to meteorology, which brings special interest to the subject due to its potential for application in many practical situations. The general aim of this project is to contribute to the understanding of evolving systems, especially the so-called chaotic systems, from a probabilistic point of view, with three main guiding directions: i) existence and properties of physical measures or, more generally, equilibrium states; ii) analysis of the asymptotic behavior described by limit theorems that characterize the average and extreme properties of the system, particularly associated with the study of rare events and recurrence; iii) contribution to the understanding of the properties of dynamical systems in a broader sense, whether through random perturbations or actions of free semigroups.
Legislation and regulations: Law no. 40/2014, updated by Decree-Law no. 123/2019, of 28 August (Statute of Scientific Research Grant Holder); Regulation no. 950/2019 of 16 December (Regulation of Research Grants of the Foundation for Science and Technology); Regulation no. 184/2021, of 3 March (Regulation of Research Grants of the University of Porto) and Decree-Law no. 66/2018 of 16 August (Legal Regime of Recognition of academic degrees and diplomas of Higher Education awarded by Foreign Higher Education Institutions).
Work place: The work will be developed in the Department of mathematics, Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP), under the guidance of José Ferreira Alves e Jorge Milhazes Freitas
Grant duration: Initial duration of 3 months, with beginning on 15 th June 2025, eventually renewable up, but not exceeding the end date of the project. (31/10/2025)
In accordance with the provisions of Article 7, nº7, once this BIPD (Post-Doctoral Research Scholarship) contract has expired, the grant holder cannot sign a new scholarship contract with FCUP.
Maintenance allowance amount: The grant stipend amounts to 1851€ according to the table of values of the grants awarded directly by FCT, I.P. in the Country (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores).The payment will be made by bank transfer.
Voluntary Social Insurance: As long as the scholarship is for a duration of 6 months or more, and in compliance with the provisions of article 10 of Law 40/2004, the grantee shall be entitled to the assumption by FCUP of the charges resulting from contributions levied on the first of the echelons referred to in article 36 of Decree-Law no. 40/89, of 1 February, with the addition of charges arising from the option for a higher tax base being incurred on its own.
Personal Accident Insurance: In addition to these allowances, the grantee will be covered by personal accident insurance.
Selection procedure: The selection methods to be used are as follows:
AC - Curricular evaluation (until 20 points weighting 90%) divided as follows:
A) Relevance of the defended PhD thesis topic to the module on statistical stability and linear response in dynamical systems (9 points).
B) Knowledge and experience, acquired during the PhD, in techniques for analyzing chaotic dynamical systems applied to the study of statistical stability and linear response (9 points).
C) Level of proficiency in Portuguese and English languages (2 points).
The Curricular evaluation (AC) will be obtained using the following formula:
AC = A+B+C
In the second phase and after the classification of the candidates based on the AC obtained, an interview (E) will be conducted with a maximum of 2 candidates (until 20 points weighting 10%) and the final classification (CF) will be in the following formula:
CF = AC * 90% + E * 10%
The candidate who has a foreign academic degree or diploma whose final classification is expressed on a different classification scale from the Portuguese one or does not have a classification, for evaluation purposes, must present a document proving the recognition of the foreign degree or diploma and the conversion of the classification for the Portuguese classification scale until the closing date of applications for the competition. If the documents attesting the degree submitted by the candidates do not present the final classification of the degree required in this notice with the respective grade converted to the Portuguese classification scale, the jury will consider, for evaluation purposes, that the candidate has the minimum classification (10 points) of a maximum of 20 points) required to obtain a degree in Portugal.
Candidates whose application has been assessed with a final classification less than 15 points are not eligible to sign the contract of the fellowship.
Selection committee:
ㆍPresident – José Ferreira Alves, Full Professor, FCUP
ㆍ1.º member – Jorge Miguel Milhazes de Freitas, Full Professor, FCUP
ㆍ2.º member – Ana Cristina Moreira Freitas, Associate Professor with Aggregation, FEP
ㆍ1.º alternate member – Maria de Fátima Taveira Pires de Carvalho, Associate Professor with Aggregation, FCUP
ㆍ2.º alternate member – Paulo César Rodrigues Pinto Varandas, Assistant Professor with Aggregation, University of Aveiro
Advertisement of final decision: The final results of the evaluation will be published through a list ordered by final classification, sent to candidates by email. It is further informed that, pursuant to the provisions of articles 121 et seq. of the Code of Administrative Procedure, it has a legal period of 10 working days from the day immediately following the notification, to make a decision, if it so wishes.
A complaint may be filed against this decision within 15 working days or, alternatively, an appeal may be filed within 30 working days, addressed to the Director of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, pursuant to article 191 et seq. of the Code of Administrative Procedure.
The host entity may use the final ranking list to replace the selected grantee in case he/she gives up the position, up to one year.
