The Institute of Mechanical Engineering – IDMEC is opening a call for Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships

Applications are open for one Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships, within the framework of project (C644943391-00000051) with the title “Sustainable Stone by Portugal - Valorização da Pedra Natural para um futuro digital, sustentável e qualificado” and acronim Sustainable Stone, financed by from NextGenerationEU – Incentivo PRR, under the following conditions:

Scientific Area: Mechanical Design and Materials Engineering

Admission Requirements:

Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships

1. to hold a PhD degree obtained in the 3 years previously to the submission of the fellowship application;
2. to have carried out the research work that led to the PhD degree in a different entity from the host institution of the fellowship;
3. Not to exceed, with this fellowship contract, including the possible renovations, an accumulated period of 3 years in this type of fellowship, continuously or with interruptions;
4. Not to have previously held a post-doctoral fellowship from IDMEC.

Workplan and the objectives to achieve:

As part of the Sustainable Stone project, specifically within WP2 – Project 4, innovative materials are being developed for 3D printing, based on blends of plant-based polymers and stone powder (rock pellets).

The postdoctoral researcher’s work plan includes the following activities:

2. Mechanical Characterization of Materials
   • Preparation and 3D printing of test specimens using different compositions of plant-based polymers and stone powder.
   • Mechanical testing to evaluate properties such as tensile, compressive, and flexural strength.

4. Study of Solar-Induced Degradation
   • Design and construction of an experimental apparatus to simulate solar exposure.
   • Accelerated aging tests in a climate chamber.
   • Evaluation of the impact of degradation on the mechanical properties of the materials.

6. Data Analysis and Dissemination
   • Processing and interpretation of the experimental data.
   • Writing of at least one scientific article for submission to a peer-reviewed international journal.
   • Participation in scientific dissemination activities, such as conferences, workshops, and seminars.

Workplace: The work will developed at IDMEC - Institute of Mechanical Engineering, being both the Host and Contracting Entity, and under the scientific supervision of Prof Marco Leite

Duration: The research fellowship(s) will have the duration of 3 months. It’s expected to begin in August 2025, and cannot be renewed.

Monthly maintenance allowance: The amount of the monthly maintenance allowance is

€ 1.851,00, being the payment method by Wire Transfer.

Selection methods: The selection methods will be the following: CV evaluation to select to 2 candidates and individual interview with 50% for each.

Selection minutes: Brief minutes of the jury meetings will be drawn up, indicating the names and affiliation of the jury members, the names of the excluded and admitted candidates, the criteria and respective assessment by candidate, ranking of candidates, and all decisions must have clear and sufficient grounds. The minutes must be accompanied by declarations of conflict of interest (CDI) of all members of the jury.

Announcement/ notification of the results: The final evaluation results will communicated to all applicants by email.

After be notified, candidates have 10 working days to submit a formal rebuttal, by email.

Application deadline and formalization: The call is open in the period between June 16 and June 30, until 18:00, 2025.

Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships

It is mandatory to formalize applications with the submission of the following documents: Curriculum Vitae; academic degree certificate; motivation letter; declaration on honour that the applicant does not exceed with this contract an accumulated period of three years in this type of fellowship, continuously or with interruptions, within the technological and scientific system, and that the research work that led to the PhD degree was carried out in a different entity from the host institution of the fellowship.
