Your Field of Work:

The Analysis of Hydrological Systems working group at the Institute of Environmental Science and Geography, which currently consists of two permanent and nine temporary scientific staff and two technical staff members, is responsible for teaching in the fields of hydrology, climatology and environmental modelling in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes in Geoecology/Geography/CLEWS. Demand of a growing global population for energy, water, food, and living space is radically changing our planet. Human activities alter our climate and land and water use, with a significant impact on the water cycle including its extremes. A forward-looking quantitative understanding of how changes in climate and the use of water and land resources are altering the water cycle and its extremes is crucial for planning our future. Our working group is funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation's endowed professorship program to address these issues. The working language of the research group is English.

The Scope of Your Responsibilities:

  • • Independent research in the field of global hydrology, for example using AI/statistical methods, remote sensing or process-based modelling (for further qualification with the aim of preparing a habilitation), preparing research proposals and scientific publications;
  • • Teaching: Supervision and organization of exercises and lectures in existing modules within the fields of hydrology/climatology/environmental modelling;
  • • Assistance in the organisation of courses and in the general organisation of the working group.

Further academic qualification (doctorate or post-doctoral thesis (Habilitation)) is possible. At least one-third of working hours is available for in-depth academic work.

The teaching load is based on the requirements of the Teaching Obligations Ordinance (LehrVV) of the State of Brandenburg, as amended, and the Regulation for Calculating Teaching Load that was passed by the Senate of the University of Potsdam. This position is assigned to the group of academic employees, with further qualification opportunities.

Your Qualifications:

  • • University degree in a suitable topic of the Sciences;
  • • Doctorate (dissertation submitted at the time of application) in fields relevant for research in global hydrology, for example in the areas of statistical hydrology or AI, remote sensing or mathematical modelling;
  • • Proven experience in independent research and publications;
  • • Experience in and affinity for academic teaching at Bachelor's and Master's level;
  • • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary and multicultural team, and to communicate in English.
