Project leader: Dr hab. Anna Marusiak

Project title: “Investigating the mechanisms of epithelial/mesenchymal plasticity and metastasis.”

Project is carried out within the OPUS 25 programme of the National Science Centre.

About the group: The Laboratory of Molecular OncoSignalling is interested in cancer biology, cellular signalling during oncogenesis and the identification of novel targets for cancer therapies.

Signal transduction plays an important role in cancer development and protein kinases, which are the master regulators of signalling pathways, represent key targets in cancer treatment. Our group wants to understand how aberrant signalling in cancer cells contributes to cancer development, metastasis or therapy resistance, and how we can use that knowledge to design novel anticancer treatments. In our studies we use human and mouse cancer cell lines and syngeneic as well as xenograft tumour models in mice. We also use 3D cell cultures, co-culture techniques, flow cytometry, mass spectrometry and various phenotypic assays including invasion and migration assays.

Project description: The ability of cancer cells to metastasize results from the epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EM) program. Most cancer cells remain plastic during metastasis and co-express both epithelial and mesenchymal traits (hybrid E/M, EM plasticity) to sustain high migratory and invasive potential. However, the range of genes involved in this regulation and their action mechanism is unknown. The main objective of this project is to investigate the role of specific kinases in EM plasticity control and their contribution to metastasis formation. Our project will integrate the most powerful techniques in molecular biology: RNA-seq and mass spectrometry, for transcriptome and proteome analysis respectively; as well as functional in vitro and in vivo studies. We will also include 3D cell culture as part of this project. Additionally, we will look into the role of tumour-microenvironment in the progression of cancer cells (using co-culture models).

Key responsibilities of candidates:

  • Perform experiments using biochemical and molecular biology techniques (independently and in collaboration with other team members);
  • Design experiments and analyse the data;
  • Data preparation and writing of manuscripts;
  • Actively participate in lab meetings, scientific seminars and conferences.

Requirements of candidates:

  • PhD degree in molecular biology, biophysics, biochemistry or related fields of life sciences (the title obtained not earlier than in 2018 – this is a requirement of the grant funder and the given period can be extended by maternity or other long-term, justified leaves);
  • Strong publication record as a first author;
  • Solid knowledge and familiarity with laboratory techniques in at least one of the following disciplines: molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology;
  • Very good command of English;
  • Strong motivation to work and pursue scientific questions, creativity and analytical thinking.

We offer:

  • Work in a young, active, team in an excellent scientific environment;
  • Comprehensive training in biochemistry and molecular biology;
  • Access to the state-of-the-art equipment and facilities;
  • Participation in courses and conferences;
  • Participation in the supervision of MSc and PhD students.

Application deadline: 30th September 2025

Required documents:

  • Motivation letter;
  • CV with a list of publications and conferences attended;
