This Post-Doctoral position is part of the Interreg Alcotra RESIL-AV project, which will start on September 1, 2025, and run for a total duration of three years. The objective of this Franco-Italian project is to develop a common approach to a shared challenge: enhancing the resilience of avalanche hazard forecasting and monitoring in areas overlooking mountain roads, in a rapidly changing climate. We aim to pool procedures, snow and weather measurement tools, software, and decision-support approaches from both France and Italy, as well as the advances from the resulting research work.

This collaboration between four French partners (Université Savoie Mont Blanc, Département de la Savoie, Avalanches Localisation Études Actions, data-avalanche.org) and four Italian partners (Fondazione Montagna Sicura, Politecnico di Torino, Regione Piemonte, Provincia di Cuneo) will focus on:

  • Sharing French and Italian experiences and jointly reflecting on the optimal placement of new measurement and observation instruments to be deployed during the project;

  • Pooling data from measurement and observation networks, as well as snow testing protocols, to provide access to a larger, harmonized information system on both sides of the border;

  • Mutual training and harmonization of practices, with a concrete goal of addressing a civil safety issue;

  • Creating a common foundation (knowledge, methods, tools, etc.) for avalanche risk management on mountain roads, based on the analysis and comparison of the different methodological approaches used in France and Italy, in order to formalize the definition of “best practices”;

  • Jointly integrating project results into the respective information systems, relying heavily on the use of a large volume of heterogeneous data from both the Italian and French sides, which may sometimes be incomplete;

  • Conducting two crisis management exercises (one in France and one in Italy) involving both the technical and rescue services as well as local populations, and transboundary staff counterparts.

The missions will focus on the decision-support approach called CRISTAL:

  • Understanding the work already carried out on the snow test protocol, the input criteria of the approach, the vigilance levels produced by the approach, and the fuzzy system underlying it;

  • Testing the rules of the fuzzy system on a large number of situations in order to validate the approach and adjust the rules if necessary;

  • Continuing the work of breaking down the input criteria into sub-criteria, defining their formalization as fuzzy subsets, and characterizing their uncertainty;

  • Integrating Machine Learning algorithms to better account for low-level sensor data (precipitation, wind-driven snow transport, snow surface temperature, recent avalanche observations, etc.);

  • Proposing a method to implement the overall approach in the areas identified as potentially impacting French and Italian road networks, while continuing the work on similarity calculations between these areas;

  • Collaborating with a research engineer to implement the software tools supporting the entire approach, and to develop an end-to-end processing system as well as a hazard map visualization (Web and/or GIS);

  • Publishing the various scientific advances in conferences and peer-reviewed journals.
