Postdoctoral Research Fellow position

At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Clinical Medicine, a full-time (100%) postdoctoral research fellowship is available for a period of three (3) years. The position may be extended by a fourth year, which includes a one-year stay abroad. This position is part of the “Neuro-SysMed” project, funded by the University of Bergen.

About the project/work tasks

• The project focuses on the analysis of datasets containing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of individuals with MS who have participated in clinical studies.

The goal is to identify MRI biomarkers for diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment response by linking them with clinical, immunological, and genetic factors

Qualifications and personal qualities

• The applicant must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree within medicine or psychology or have the doctoral thesis submitted prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded at the latest within 5 months after the closing date for applications.

The applicant must have:

• Documented experience with multimodal MRI, both in research and clinical use, especially within multiple sclerosis (MS).
• Strong programming skills, for example in Bash, Python, and R.
• Solid knowledge of syntax-based statistical analysis tools.
• Strong skills in developing reproducible and transparent analysis workflows.
• Solid background in machine learning and analysis of large and complex datasets.
• Experience in adapting and applying machine learning models to clinical data.
• Strong ability to communicate scientific work both internally within the research environment and externally to a broader audience.

The applicant preferably should have:

• Experience presenting their research at relevant national and/or international conferences.
• A strong academic publication record within relevant fields.
• Experience in writing and submitting applications for research funding.
• Interdisciplinary expertise that complements the research environment – a background in psychology will be especially valued.
• Proficiency in Norwegian and English, both oral and written.
• Ability to work independently, in a structured manner, and possess good collaboration skills.
• It is an advantage to have a solid national and international professional network.
• It is also an advantage to have experience supervising master’s and/or PhD students.

About the position of postdoctoral research fellow

The position of postdoctoral research fellow is a fixed-term appointment with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. You cannot be employed as a postdoctoral fellow for more than one fixed term period at the same institution.

The employee may be assigned required duties in the form of teaching and similar work at the department.
