In accordance with the collective agreement for university employees, the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery (Faculty of Medicine at the Johannes Kepler University) invites applications by candidates holding a doctorate/PhD to apply for a clinical tenure-track professorship position in “Pediatric Cardiac Surgery”.

In accordance with the collective agreement for university employees and the 2002 Austrian Universities Act (UG) regarding a full-time position (40 hours per week) for a limited period of six years, prospective applicants for the tenure-track position at the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at the JKU’s Faculty of Medicine must hold a doctorate/Ph.D. The position will involve a combination of research, teaching, and clinical care. The allocation of time between research and teaching (30%) and clinical practice (70%) will be determined in consultation with the Kepler University Hospital.

The position is open to highly qualified junior researchers holding a doctorate/PhD in medicine and includes the option of concluding a qualification agreement which could result in a permanent position as Associate Professor (section 99 para. 5 and 6 of the Austrian Universities Act).

The successful candidate is expected to strengthen the JKU’s research activities in the field of pediatric cardiac surgery. A major focus of research is the treatment and prevention of Fontan-associated diseases by improving existing surgical techniques.

The holder of the clinical tenure-track professorship in pediatric cardiac surgery will work with the Pediatric Cardiac Surgery team to care for patients with congenital heart defects of all ages. This includes the surgical correction of complex vitia in newborns as well as surgical palliative procedures in patients with uncorrectable vitia and operations on adults with congenital heart defects. A further area of work is the application of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation therapy in children without heart defects, assist device therapy, as well as perioperative surgical care in the affected intensive care units (OP-intensive II, PICU, NICU).

The holder of this position should be willing to actively engage in interdisciplinary and cross-professional partnerships between interdisciplinary fields as well as with professional groups in nursing and medical-technical services.

The prospective applicant will be expected to demonstrate a record of scholarly activity following the successful completion of a doctorate/PhD, including outstanding publications, teaching experience, and having successfully acquired external research funding. The candidate’s doctorate/PhD degree should be no older than ten years, whereby career breaks on account of parental leave, military service, etc. may be deducted.

Detailed information regarding the position, responsibilities, and requirements is available at: www.jku.at/tenuretrack. The job description contains information regarding the position and its strategic direction of research, the areas of priority, the type of research expected, the expected scope of contributions to teaching/education, the required degree of professional experience, the key qualifications and objectives to be met during the course of employment, key information regarding the existing research infrastructure, and other position-specific requirements.

The minimum annual gross salary on the basis of full-time employment in accordance with the collective agreement is EUR 69,060.60. The annual minimum salary under the collective agreement will be raised to EUR 81,314.80 upon concluding a qualification agreement. The annual gross salary will be based on a specialist's salary level (FA+) in accordance with section 48a of the 2001 Upper Austrian Salary Act. The final definitive salary will be discussed with the Rector as part of the appointment negotiations.

At the JKU, performance is considered in the context of each individual's biography and opportunities. This recognizes that academic achievements can be embedded in different personal circumstances (such as partial employment or career breaks due to caregiving, childcare, etc.). In the interest of equal opportunities, the evaluation of the candidate’s qualifications thus allows for personal factors such as academic age.

The Johannes Kepler University wishes to increase the proportion of female faculty members and therefore especially welcomes applications from qualified women. If applicants are equally qualified, a woman will be given preference for this position. The university welcomes applications from qualified applicants who have physical disabilities. These applications will be given special consideration.

Prospective applicants interested in the position are requested to electronically send a complete application to the Rector of the Johannes Kepler University by no later than November 5, 2025, observing the 4-week application deadline. Please submit the application electronically, in German/English, at: https://forms.jku.at/pm/tenuretrack.

Please enclose the following documents with your application: A letter of application (addressing in particular your reasons for applying and suitability for the position), a current curriculum vitae, a list of publications (including a ranking of the three publications you consider to be the most important), a description of prior activities in education and lecturing, including any student evaluations, a description of research projects, studies, and collaboration efforts, a description of prior professional practices and activities related in content to the activities in research and teaching, an outline of prospective projects and objectives in the field of research and teaching.
