Postdoctoral Research Fellow position within experimental quantum technologies for laser fusion

At the Department of Physics and Technology there is a vacancy for a postdoctoral research position within experimental quantum technologies for laser fusion experiments within the NAPLIFE collaboration. The position is for a fixed term of 3 years and is financed from the ongoing Norwegian national Laser fusion project FUSENOW, supported by the Trond Mohn Research Foundation.

About the project/work tasks:

The project aims to design, develop and characterize nano-fabricated targets for use in laser fusion experiments, to increase, and improve the target ignition and utilization. In addition to developing and fabricating the targets, a part of the project will be to build a test setup for target characterization at UiB. The most promising targets fabricated will be brought to the ELI-ALPs European laser-infrastructure at Szeged, Hungary, for characterization.

The postdoctoral position involves tasks such as designing, manufacturing and testing the laser fusion targets. The work will include simulation, experimental work, characterization and data analysis. The modelling and analysing of experimental results will be done in collaboration with the local and international NAPLIFE team. The candidate is expected to take an active part in the target design and the continuous development based on experimental results. The candidate will have the chance to take an active role in the development of the research and steer the target development together with the PI.

At UiB the candidate will have access to several lab-facilities with modern fabrication and characterization equipment. The work will be carried out in an active research environment as a member of Nanophysics group.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

• Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree (PhD) within physics, nanotechnology or material science, or must have submitted his/her doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
• Extensive laboratory experience is a requirement.
• Experience working with nanomaterials and in a chemical lab is an advantage.
• Hands on experience with advanced instrumentation and ultra high vacuum equipment is an advantage.
• Experience from working with lasers and spectroscopy is an advantage.
• Prior experience with the NAPLIFE project is an advantage.
• Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and have the ability to cooperate with others.
• Applicants must have good written and oral English skills.

Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.

Special requirements for the position

The University of Bergen is subjected to the regulation for export control system. The regulation will be applied in the processing of the applications.

About the position of postdoctoral research fellow:

The postdoctoral position is a fixed term position with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. If the appointee lacks teaching experience, or other relevant qualifications, the employment period may be increased to 3 years and 3 months. Teaching and other duties will in such cases be added to the position. There will be opportunities for this, and the candidate is encouraged to take part in the supervision of master's students. The position may be extended by up to one year (maximum 4 years in total) if the appointee is granted externally financed research stays abroad. Individuals may not be hired for more than one fixed-term period as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same institution.

For postdoctoral research fellow positions associated with externally financed projects, the completion of the project proposal for the qualifying work, as well as a progress plan, will be developed in cooperation with the supervisor and head of department.

It is a requirement that the project is completed in the course of the period of employment.

Further increases in salary are made according to length of service in the position. A higher salary may be considered for a particularly well-qualified applicant.
