LABORATORY PRESENTATION
IHRIM (Institut d’Histoire des Représentations et des Idées dans les Modernités) is a transsecular (16th–20th centuries) and multidisciplinary research unit (philosophy, French and foreign literatures, musicology, theatre studies, art history, history of science and technology).

POSITION
This position is part of the E2F project – Franciscan Writings in French (1217–1517). Literary Communication and the 'Invention' of Modernity (ANR-23-CE54-0006), funded by the French National Research Agency for 2023–2028.
The project is coordinated by Thibaut Radomme, Associate Professor at Jean Monnet University Saint-Étienne and member of IHRIM. The research team includes: Mattia Cavagna (Université catholique de Louvain), Florent Coste (Université de Lorraine), and Cédric Giraud (Université de Genève – EPHE).
How did the Franciscans use literature to disseminate their ideas in secular society between the Middle Ages and the early modern period? This is the question posed by the E2F project. From the 13th century onward, the Franciscan order appears as a remarkable organization of cultural production and dissemination, embedded at the heart of economic and political power networks. It notably circulated literary works in the French language, conceived as didactic and ideological supports accessible to lay people distant from the scholarly world. Two main lines of research run throughout the project: the creation of a catalogue of 'Franciscan Works in French', devoted to the systematic cataloguing of medieval French texts of Franciscan origin; and the examination of an initial corpus of Franciscan texts composed of the French Lives of Saint Francis and Saint Clare of Assisi, which are the subject of philological, literary and bibliological study. The E2F project thus explores how Franciscan writings, by shaping a new form of 'literary preaching', ensured the elaboration and transmission to the illitterati of doctrinal, moral, political and spiritual norms. More broadly, it aims to open the way to a new paradigm in medieval literary studies by defining the outlines of a 'literary Franciscanity' in the vernacular.

ACTIVITES
The recruited researcher will carry out two main tasks:
- critical edition of a French Life of St. Francis of Assisi (Version E – Paris, BnF, fr. 9762)
- scholarly contributions to the 'Franciscan Works in French' database

In addition to these two tasks, the recruited person will also contribute to the following:
- co-organization of study days and an international conference
- co-editing, with the project's scientific coordinator, of the collective volume resulting from the study days
- active participation in meetings, scientific events and outreach activities planned within the project
- teaching medieval literature at undergraduate level (with additional remuneration under the hourly-paid scheme)

PROFESIONNAL SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
• Degree
The recruited person must have defended (no later than at the start date, and at the earliest 3 years before the start date) a doctoral thesis in philology, linguistics or medieval French literature, or in another humanities discipline consistent with the scientific skills required below.
• Knowledge
Excellent command of Old French.
Expertise in palaeography, philology and textual editing.
Knowledge of medieval French literature.
Basic knowledge of medieval Latin.
• Technical Skills
Proficiency in the tools and skills needed to produce a born-digital edition (XML-TEI encoding) and to feed a digital database (Heurist software) will be considered an asset. However, this is not a requirement, and the recruited person will be able to train in these tools during the contract.
