BI 024/2025 (PI177-CI-IPOP-01-2023-HORIZON-ONCOSCREEN)


The Board of Directors of the Portuguese Oncology Institute of Porto Francisco Gentil, EPE (IPO Porto) opens a call for hiring one Junior Researcher for research activities, in accordance with the applicable Regulations, under an unfixed-term contract for a predicted period of 12 months or for the duration of the project, within the scope of the project ONCOSCRREN – A European “shield” against colorectal cancer based on novel, more precise and affordable risk-based screening methods (PI177-CI-IPOP-01-2023-HORIZON-ONCOSCREEN) funded by European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HADEA) under development at Experimental, Pathology and Therapeutics Group at the IPO PORTO Research Center, hosted at IPO Porto.


  1. 1. Profile of the candidate:

Any national, foreign or stateless candidate(s) who holds the following requirements can apply:

Mandatory:

  • • PhD in Biological Sciences or other related areas;
  • • Good publications record, with at least two original articles published in biomarkers for colorectal cancer detection, in high profile, peer reviewed international scientific journals (Q1);
  • • Experience in Bioinformatics;
  • • Experience in handling biological samples (blood and stool) and molecular biology techniques.


Preferential:

  • • English proficiency (oral and written);
  • • Motivation to work in an interactive and collaborative environment;
  • • Organized, able to prioritize and collaborative deadlines;
  • • Driven to fulfil goals and reach objectives.


Note: If the master's degree or doctor's degree, as applicable, were awarded by a foreign higher education institution, the degree must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of August 18, and all the formalities established there until the application deadline.



  1. 2. Work plan

The workplan for this grant is as follows:

  • • Perform bioinformatics and data analysis of the data obtained within the project.
  • • Assist in biological samples collection, namely liquid biopsies, by articulating efforts with the clinical teams and interacting with patients;
  • • Process biological samples;
  • • Implement molecular biology techniques applied to the identification and validation biomarkers, including extraction, quantification and quality assessment of nucleic acids, real-time PCR, etc.
  • • Keep updated the project(s) databases and lab notebook;
  • • Prepare scientific reports, communications and papers.

Portuguese Labor Law, approved by Law No. 7/2009, of February 12.


4. Jury Members:

The jury is composed by:

President – Dr. Luís Carlos Lima, PhD

1st effective member – Prof. Dr. Mário Dinis Ribeiro, MD, PhD

2nd effective member – Prof. Dr. Lúcio Lara Santos, MD, PhD

1st supplementary member – Dr. Ana Carina Pereira, PhD

2nd supplementary member – Dr. José Alexandre Ferreira, PhD


5. Start date and place of work:

The contract is expected to begin in 1st January 2026 and last 12 months or until the end of the project. The activities will be developed, mainly, at IPO Porto.


6. Monthly remuneration:

The gross monthly remuneration is 2351,53€, corresponding to the 1st tier of the initial salary level on an exclusive basis, in accordance with the provisions of articles 1 and 2 of Regulatory Decree no. 11-A/2017, of December 29th.


7. Application process:

The call is open between 24th November, to 10th December, 2025. Applications and the required supporting documents (indicated below4) must be sent by e-mail (to: recrutamento@ipoporto.min-saude.pt), in PDF format, indicating the reference of the position [BI 024/2025 (ONCOSCREEN/ PI177-CI-IPOP-01-2023-HORIZON-ONCOSCREEN]:

  • • One recommendation letter (optional);
  • • Other documents that applicant may consider to be relevant to prove the scientific course.
  • • Application form (Annex I) and Informed consent (Annex II).


Note: The non-compliance with these requirements will determine immediate rejection of the application.


Documents must be attached directly to the application email without links to external platforms/drives. All documents should be saved in Portable Document Format (.pdf) to facilitate their reading. The files must be named with the applicant’s first and last name and must not exceed 25 MB altogether. These can be compressed in .zip format.



8. Evaluation criteria:

The admitted applications will be evaluated by assessing the candidates' academic or professional qualifications, their professional background, the relevance of professional experience and academic training, and the type of functions performed in accordance with the profile described above.


The jury will analyse the application documents according to the following criteria (detailed in Annex III):

A. Curricular evaluation (70%):

  1. 1) Previous experience in accordance with the proposed work plan and the preferential requirements (50%).
  2. 2) Publications and participation in scientific meetings (10%);
  3. 3) Academic qualifications (10%).

B. Motivation Letter (30%):

  1. 1) Ability to demonstrate the interest of previously acquired training and the suitability of their skills to the project to be developed (20%);
  2. 2) Motivation and avaliability for the planned activities (10%)

After the evaluation of all admitted applications, the jury will write a meeting minute describing the whole process of recruitment, evaluation, and selection, including an ordered list of approved candidates and the final decision of the jury. The final decision of the jury shall be validated by the Board of Directors of IPO Porto, which is also responsible for deciding on hiring.



9. Form of advertising / notification of results

The recruitment results will be announced by email to the email address indicated by the candidates in their Curricula Vitae/Motivation Letter and will be published at https://ipoporto.pt/nos-ipo/emprego-e-carreira/.


10. Preliminary hearing and deadline for final decision:

Pursuant to article 121 of the Administrative Procedure Code (CPA in Portuguese), after notified, all applicants who have an unfavourable provisional decision may use their right to dispute it during the preliminary hearing phase, which takes place within ten working days. Panel’s final decisions are pronounced within a period of 90 days, from application deadline.
