A competition is open for the attribution of one work contract for a junior researcher within the scope of the project ATLANTIDA II - Observatório Costeiro do Atlântico Norte de Portugal, with the reference NORTE2030-FEDER-01799200 , supported by Programa Regional do Norte 2021-2027 [NORTE2030] , at the Research Unit - Interdisciplinary Research Center Marine and Environmental, for the exercise of research activities in A3 – Biobanks as tools for marine conservation, according to the following conditions:


1. Scientific area: Biological Sciences


2. General admission requirements:

i) PhD in Biological or Biomedical Sciences;

ii) At least 5 years’ experience in growing, maintaining and preserving cultures of marine non-photosynthetic microorganisms in biobanks;

iii) At least 2 years´ experience in the curation and management of biobanks;

iv) Training and experience in certification processes, namely with ISO9001:2015;

v) Technical and scientific knowledge in molecular techniques and bioinformatics tools for microorganisms’ identification;

vi) Technical and scientific knowledge on microbial communities’ characterization using molecular tools, namely NGS and bioinformatic pipelines;

vii) Excellent scientific and technical writing skills in Portuguese and English.


Any national, foreign or stateless candidate(s) who hold a doctorate degree in Biology or related a scientific areas and a scientific and professional curriculum whose profile is suited for the activity to be performed, can apply.


In the event the doctorate degree was awarded by a foreign higher education institution, said degree must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law no. 66/2018 of 16th August until the signature of the contract.


3. Working plan:

The selected candidate will be responsible for developing Activity A3 – Biobanks as tools for marine conservation, which aims to establish marine biobanks as tools for biodiversity preservation and biotechnological exploration. This effort includes creating standardized protocols for sample collection and storage, covering from microorganisms to larger organisms such as sponges and deep-sea corals. These biobanks will be integrated into national and international networks, such as the Portuguese Blue Biobank (BAP) and the European Marine Biological Resource Centre (EMBRC), maximizing resource and data sharing. The development of a digital database to manage access to these samples, following the guidelines of the Nagoya Protocol, will ensure that the collected biological resources are accessible for future research and biotechnological applications, such as the creation of new products and services in the blue bioeconomy.


4. Legislation and official rules: Decree-Law no. 57/2016 of 29th August, which approved the doctorate hiring regime destined to stimulate scientific and technological employment for all knowledge areas (RJEC), updated by the Law no. 57/2017 of 19th July, Labour Code approved Law no. 7/2009 of 12th February, under its current reading and Regulatory Decree No. 11-A/2017, of 29th December.


5. Workplace: The work will be carried out at CIIMAR, in close articulation with the coordinators Ana Paula Mucha and Fátima Carvalho, at Terminal de Cruzeiros do Porto de Leixões, Av. General Norton de Matos, s/n, 4450-208 Matosinhos, Portugal.


6. Duration of the contract: An uncertain term work contract will be signed starting January 2026, under the regime of exclusivity, according to legal terms (articles n. 140, no 1 and no 2, g; and article n. 148, − Labour Code and article 6, no 1 b) e no 3 from Decree-Law n. 57/2016, de 29 -8).


7. Monthly salary: The monthly remuneration to be attributed is that provided for in paragraph nº 1 of article 15 of the RJEC, in the wording introduced by Law nº 57/2017 from 19-7, corresponding to level of Doctorate Junior Researcher, level 33 of the single remuneration table, approved by Administrative Rule no. 1553-C / 2008, 31-12,updated with DL n.º 109-A/2021, de 7-12, corresponding to 2 351,53€ (two thousand two hundred and twenty eight euros and eleven cents), vacation, Christmas and food allowance apart.


8. Selection methods:

The ranking of candidates will be performed by Curriculum Vitae evaluation based on:

• Relevant scientific experience: 60%;

• Merit of the CV in the scientific area: 40%

The evaluation process may include an interview with the first three graders, which is intended to clarify aspects related to the results of their research, in which case the interview weighs 10% and the previous evaluation weighs 90%.


Pursuant to article 5 of RJEC, selection is to be made based on candidate scientific and curricular career evaluation.

Scientific and curricular career evaluation focuses on relevance, quality and up-to-dateness, associated to the contest theme:

a) of scientific and technological production in the last five years, deemed most relevant by the candidate;

b) of research activities, applied or based on practical work, developed in the last five years, deemed most impactful by the candidate;

c) of knowledge extension and dissemination activities developed in the last five years, namely under the scope of the promotion of culture and scientific practices, deemed most relevant by the candidate.

d) of science, technology and innovation management activities, or of experience in monitoring the scientific and technological system or the higher education system, in Portugal or abroad.

The five-year period mentioned above can be extended by the panel, if requested by the candidate, whenever the suspension of scientific activities is reasoned by socially protected grounds like parental leave, long-term serious illness, and other legal situations of unavailability to work.


9. Composition of the jury selection: In accordance with article 13 of RJEC and according to the respective order of nomination, the competition jury has the following composition:

Vogal: Catarina Magalhães


10. Deadline for application and presentation of applications: The application period starts on 28/11/2025 and ends on 15/12/2025.

10.1 Applications cannot exceed 20 MB and must be formalised by e-mail to rh@ciimar.up.pt and explicitly state the announcement reference in the subject: 2025_110_IJ_AtlantidaII.

10.2 Applications shall include all supported documents encompassed by section 2 for tender admission, namely:

a) Copy of the eligibility certificates;

b) Curriculum vitae, detailed and structured according to section 8., including information regarding: academic qualifications, scientific and technological production, and research, extension and management activities;

c) Other documentation relevant for the evaluation of qualifications in a related scientific area;

d) Copy of up to 5 most relevant publications;

e) Motivation letter;

f) Contacts e-mail address and phone number.


All candidates who formalise their applications in an improper way or fail to prove the requirements imposed by this tender are excluded from admission. In case of doubt, the panel is entitled to request any candidate to present further documentation supporting their statements.

False statements provided by the candidates shall be punished by law.


11. Form of advertising/notification of results: The results of the first step of the evaluation (pre-selection) will be published on the website of CIIMAR and sent by e-mail. The candidates have a 10-working day term in which to contest the decision, if they so wish, as provided for in the "Código do Procedimento Administrativo", in a preliminary hearing setting.

Panel’s final decisions are pronounced within a maximum period of 90 days, counting from deadline for submission of applications.

Tender is exclusively destined to fill this specify vacancy and can be terminated at any time until approval of final candidate list, expiring with the respective occupation of said vacancy.


12.
