EHESP-School of Public Health is a French scientific, cultural and professional public institution. EHESP is a member of the network of public service schools (RESP), France Universities and the conference of Grandes écoles (CGE).

1. Department

This position is assigned to the DEESSE department and attached to the IRSET laboratory (https://www.irset.org/fr). The department's mission is to contribute, through research and expertise, to knowledge of the risks associated with environmental factors, their sources, their measurement, their distribution in the population, and their prevention in order to promote healthy environments. In 2022, DEESSE has 11 teacher-researchers and teacher-experts representing scientific disciplines, professions, and fields related to environmental health and occupational health.

The position is part of the CARTODEPO transdisciplinary research program « CARTOgraphie participative des anciennes DEcharges et des POllutions associées » (Collaborative mapping of former landfills and associated pollution) led by the CNRS (Geosciences Rennes) and funded by IRIS-E. Regular interaction with the interdisciplinary team working on the subject—including researchers in sociology, analytical chemistry, geochemistry, geophysics, as well as doctoral and master's students—is therefore expected.

1. Activities

Former landfills represent a source of environmental pollution whose extent is still poorly understood, due both to the incomplete documentation (location, content) and to the invisibility of subsurface processes. Waste leaching causes multiple contaminants to enter the underground environment, where they interact with the minerals and microorganisms present. These interactions impact the chemical composition of groundwater along its flowpath until the final discharge into surface water (lakes, rivers, wetlands) and marine water, and can expose certain populations to contaminants through associated uses (drinking water production, swimming, fishing, etc.).

The objective of the post-doc is to characterize the chemical signature of former landfills and understand its dependence on the geological context and the type of landfill. It will initially require to conduct a spatio-temporal analysis of field data—water chemistry, soil and sediment chemistry, geophysical imaging, hydrology, data from sociological surveys and archival work—in the form of a conceptual model that will enable hypotheses to be developed regarding the predominant mechanisms of transfer from landfills to the underground environment. A substantial but incomplete dataset is available for the two study areas, and this phase will involve supplementary data acquisition, in collaboration with the project partners.

In a second stage, the hypotheses raised by the conceptual model will be tested through laboratory experiments, which may be conducted either in columns or at the pore scale (millifluidics and microfluidics), in order to answer more fundamental research questions about the subsurface processes of interaction between certain minerals (e.g., sulfides and metal oxides, clays) and certain contaminants of health concern (e.g., trace metals and PFAS); further interaction with microorganisms may also be studied during the experiments. Depending on the results, the transition from a conceptual model to a numerical model simulating flow, transport, and reactivity may be considered, based on modeling parameters determined in the laboratory.

The post-doc fellow will also be expected to participate in discussions on the development, technically led by an EHESP engineer, of a non-targeted analytical method for the water matrix. Their role will be to help prioritize the families of molecules to be researched using the method and to interpret preparatory tests carried out on samples taken from the study sites, in order to ensure that the method developed is relevant for the targeted analysis of contamination around landfills.
