The international FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) project, currently under construction, will offer one of the largest research infrastructures world-wide.

The Materials Research Department at GSI seeks an outstanding Postdoctoral Researcher to join the DINERWA project, carried out in cooperation with several German and European partners. The candidate will investigate radiation effects in fusion-relevant materials including ODS steels, tungsten nanostructures, and advanced alloys.

Your qualifications

We are looking for applicants with:

• • An above-average university degree and Ph.D. in Materials Science, Physics, or a related field
• • A strong research background in radiation physics and materials characterization
• • Experience with advanced characterization methods (e.g., SIMS/SNMS, XRD, Nanoindentation, Laser-flash analysis, SEM/EBSD)
• • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a team effectively in an international, multidisciplinary environment

Knowledge is expected in the following areas:

• • Solid-state physics and ion-matter interactions
• • Materials performance under extreme conditions
• • Experience with vacuum systems and in-situ or on-line measurements at ion accelerator or synchrotron beam lines
• • Beam-matter transport codes (FLUKA, PHITS or GEANT4) or finite element simulations (ANSYS or COMSOL)
• • Programming proficiency in Python or C++ for data analysis and experiment controls
• • Experience with non-contact measurement techniques like laser Doppler vibrometry or thermal radiography is advantageous

Your tasks:

• • Procure, design and commission a laser Doppler vibrometry-based experimental setup for non-contact measurements of mechanical properties
• • Develop control systems and data analysis frameworks to implement the setup at GSI irradiation facilities for on-line diagnostics
• • Support internal and external users of GSI irradiation facilities
• • Coordinate irradiation campaigns of radiation-induced effects in fusion materials together with European project partners
• • Prepare proposals for and coordinate helium implantation campaigns
• • Co-supervise students and contribute to collaborative research activities

Employment conditions

• • Full-time (100%) fixed-term position for 24 months.
• • Salary according to the collective agreement for public employees (TVöD Bund), effective at GSI.
