The Media Studies Department at the Film University is seeking to fill a position in the ERC-StG project ‘Cinematic Atmospheres: Towards a New Ecology of the Moving Image’ (CATNEMI) as soon as possible, but no later than 1 May 2026.

The position will be filled in accordance with § 52 of the Brandenburg Higher Education Act (BbgHG). The position is tied to the duration of the project and is limited to 24 months (without the possibility of extension).

Project description:

The European Research Council-funded project ‘CATNEMI’ is dedicated to researching cinematic atmospheres in all their experiential, aesthetic and ethical implications as an attractive but also problematic, even harmful and ideologically charged phenomenon. ‘Atmospheres’ in the sense of affective, spatial aspects of a given environment have increasingly come into focus in recent decades as a forward-looking topic of interdisciplinary research. While cinema is often considered a particularly atmospheric art form, many questions remain about the specifics of cinematic atmospheres, how and by what means they are created, and what these cinematic atmospheres mean for the aesthetic and narrative experience of film. This project aims to develop a broad conceptual understanding of cinematic atmospheres based on an in-depth analysis of their operations and techniques. At a time when cinema is increasingly moving away from its classical dispositif, this project also aims to explore how the fundamental atmospheric operations of cinema appear and are modified in media environments such as news programmes, radio, video conferencing, and social media.
