The Johanna Mestorf Academy invites applications in connection with the new ARCWorlds research platform (to begin as soon as possible).

The Johanna Mestorf Academy (JMA) is a central institution of Kiel University, Germany, committed to fostering research and research education pertaining to the field of ‘Past Societal, Environmental, and Cultural Change’ (https://www.uni-kiel.de/en/jma). With its Early Career Programs, the JMA offers a unique research environment positioned at the interface of the humanities, the natural, and the social sciences. The members of the JMA design and enable research projects that explore past socio-environmental change in the framework of the Excellence Cluster ROOTS and are supported by the new research platform ARCWorlds.

The Cluster of Excellence (EXC) ROOTS (https://www.uni-kiel.de/en/cluster-roots) explores the roots of social, environmental, and cultural phenomena and processes that substantially marked past human development, aiming at a better understanding of past socio-environmental dynamics and at shedding new light on the ‘roots’ of current challenges and crises under diverse economic, ecological, and social conditions. Research questions centre around 4 topical lines: 1) the impact of human population dynamics, subsistence imperatives and landscape use on biodiversity; 2) the relation between inequalities and conflict escalation as modulated by settlement organisation and the accessibility of resources; 3) the scale of anthropogenic transformation of the environment; and 4) how boundaries come into existence and affect social well-being.

The ARCWorlds(https://www.uni-kiel.de/en/jma/research-infrastructure/arcworlds) research building is currently being established at Kiel University to host the JMA working groups and to offer high-end infrastructures to realise innovative interdisciplinary research. It also hosts the new ‘Center for Collaborative Synthesis in Archaeology’ (CCSA, www.uni-kiel.de/en/jma/research-infrastructure/ccsa-kiel), contributing to the global CfAS initiative (https://www.archsynth.org/).

Together we promote interdisciplinary research into human-environment dynamics from the Later Stone Age (around 12,000 BCE) to the end of the pre-modern era, gathering expertise in geoarchaeology and geobotany, social archaeology, physical anthropology, urban archaeology, history of knowledge, archaeobotany, archaeozoology, stable isotope research, settlement archaeology, ethnoarchaeology, data analysis, archaeoclimate and dendroarchaeology.

We are highly committed to extend/widen archaeological and palaeo-environmental research perspectives beyond a European focus to Asia and Africa, in particular. We therefore seek and invite early career experts from these continents, in particular, to enrich our research agenda with their fresh view and pertinent experience. We are seeking highly-qualified and motivated postdoctoral fellows to conduct high-quality interdisciplinary research. Postdoctoral projects will evolve in and be supported by the ROOTS Academy (https://www.uni-kiel.de/en/cluster-roots/career/roots-academy).

The scholarships are granted for two years. A monthly scholarship grant currently amounts to 3200€. In addition, all scholarship holders can apply for research funds from the JMA and benefit from a ROOTS membership.
