1 (one) Research Fellowship under Special Regime (BI-RE) for a MSc enrolled in a non-degree course

1 Research Fellowship(s) under Special Regime (BI-RE) is(are) open at the FCiências.ID – Associação para a Investigação e Desenvolvimento de Ciências, for the project “PAM AMP Oceanicas”, financed by National public entities (IPMA), under the following conditions:

1. Scientific Area: Marine Biology, Aquatic Sciences, Bioacoustics, and related fields

3. Admission requirements: Master in Biological Sciences, Bioacoustics or related fields

5. Additional optional skills and qualifications:
6. (1) Experience in passive acoustic analysis of marine environments, including the identification and characterization of biological (e.g., fish) and anthropogenic sound sources.
   (2) Experience across multiple habitat types will be positively valued.
   (3) Demonstrated capacity to measure and evaluate anthropogenic noise in accordance with MSFD (Marine Strategy Framework Directive) requirements.
   (4) Proficiency with bioacoustics analysis tools, particularly Raven Pro and R, with experience using additional relevant software considered an asset.
   (5) Strong interest in marine conservation and management, especially in the context of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and acoustic-based ecological monitoring, as demonstrated by previous activities.
   (6) Excellent communication skills, including clear and effective oral and written communication in English.
   (7) Ability to prepare conference presentations, technical reports, and scientific manuscripts, and interest in science dissemination.
   (8) Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team and to learn new analytical techniques as required.

8. Contracting requirements: Presentation of the academic qualifications and/or diplomas, if applicable. Enrolment in non-degree course developed in association or cooperation between a High Education Institution and one or multiple research units.

10. Work plan: The grant-holder will analyse passive acoustic recordings to identify and characterise anthropogenic noise at seamounts and other marine areas, taking into account the main human activities. This includes calculating broadband and third-octave band sound levels, assessing spatial and temporal variability, and evaluating noise in accordance with MSFD Descriptor 11 (impulsive sounds D11C1 and continuous low-frequency sounds D11C2). The grant-holder will also assess the identification of different taxonomic groups through spectrogram inspection and manual and/or automated classification. Reports and other dissemination outputs will be produced.

12. Legislation framework: Research Fellowship Holder Statute, in accordance with Law 40/2004, of 18 August, in its current version and the FCT Regulation for Research Studentships and Fellowships, in its current version (Reg. 950/2019 published in DR on 16th December: https://dre.pt/application/file/a/127230968, or at the FCT website: https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/regulamento.phtml.pt), and FCiências.ID Fellowship Regulation, as approved on 12th May 2020 (available at Regulamento de Bolsas de Investigação Científica da FCiências.ID).

14. Place of work: The work will be developed at the MARE – Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre, Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, under the scientific supervision of Professor Maria Clara Amorim.

16. Fellowship duration: This position is initially opened for 6 months due to start in January 2026. The fellowship contract may be potentially renewed for 6 months, in accordance with the provisions of Regulation of Research Fellowships from the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P and FCiências.ID Fellowship Regulation.

18. Monthly allowance: The fellowship amounts to €1500, according to table values of the FCiências.ID Fellowship Regulation. The fellowship holder will have a personal accident insurance and can ensure the right to social security through adherence to the voluntary social insurance scheme, if not covered by any other social protection scheme, pursuant to Código dos Regimes Contributivos do Sistema Previdencial de Segurança Social.
    The fellowship will be paid monthly by bank transfer.

20. Evaluation and selection process: Candidates will be assessed by
    a) Curricular evaluation - 45%;
21. b) Experience/skills in the areas referred to in the Additional optional skills and qualifications (Preferential Factors) - 40%;
22. c) Motivation letter - 10%; d) Reference letter – 5%.

    If necessary, the jury may conducted interviews with the 3 (three) best candidates based on the sum of criteria a) to d). In the case of an interview, the sum of the scores obtained in the evaluation criteria a) to d) will represent 70% of the final grade, and the interview will represent 30%.

    Applicants whose application is scored with a final classification of less than 70 out of 100 points are not eligible for granting a fellowship.

Time limits for the appeal procedure: In case of negative decision, the candidates have 10 business days, after the date of announcement of the results of the candidates evaluation, to pronounce their disagreement in accordance with the Código do Procedimento Administrativo. Appeals against the final decision may be submitted to the Administration Board of FCiências.ID (fciencias.id@fciencias-id.pt) within 15 business days after the notification date.

Note 1: The documents that prove the entitlement of the academic qualifications and diplomas can be dismissed during the application period and replaced by a declaration on their honour from the applicant (Minuta PT, Minute EN). Their delivery is mandatory for the fellowship contractualization.
