The University of Granada invites applications for a fully funded 3.5-year postdoctoral position within the research project “Boosting AI-driven multimodal decoding of Speech and Language from Brain Signals (brAIn2lang)”.

This postdoctoral position is part of Subproject 2 (SP2) and focuses on the development of state-of-the-art artificial intelligence algorithms for decoding speech and language directly from brain activity, using both non-invasive and invasive neuroimaging technologies. The successful candidate will be hosted at the University of Granada, primarily within the Research Centre for Information and Communication Technologies (CITIC-UGR), and will work in close collaboration with the Mind, Brain, and Behavior Research Centre (CIMCYC) and international partners.

Research Context and Project Overview

Speech is one of the most fundamental human abilities, yet it can be severely compromised by neurological injury or neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In its most severe forms, speech loss can lead to extreme communication barriers, including locked-in syndrome. Restoring communication in these cases represents one of the grand challenges at the intersection of neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and clinical neurotechnology.

The brAIn2lang project addresses this challenge by developing next-generation neural speech prostheses capable of translating intended speech and language directly from brain signals into text or synthesized speech. The project operates at the cutting edge of research, combining:

  • • Computational and cognitive neuroscience
  • • Multimodal neuroimaging, including non-invasive EEG and invasive sEEG recordings
  • • Deep learning and generative AI, including large language models and neural representation learning

A central goal of the project is to move beyond proof-of-concept decoding systems and develop robust, generalizable, and interpretable AI models that can operate across subjects, languages, and recording modalities. This requires close integration between neural data acquisition, advanced AI architectures, and theoretical models of speech and language.

The postdoctoral researcher will work on frontier technologies at this interface, contributing methodologically novel solutions with high potential impact in brain–computer interfaces, neuroprosthetics, and AI-driven healthcare technologies.

Main Responsibilities

The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to the design and development of advanced AI algorithms for decoding speech and language from neural activity. This includes:

  • • Development of novel deep learning architectures for neural decoding
  • • Learning and modeling neural representations of speech and language from EEG and sEEG data
  • • Improving generalization and robustness across participants, tasks, and recording modalities
  • • Close collaboration with experimental neuroscientists and PhD researchers to integrate neuroimaging data, language models, and AI-based decoding frameworks

The position offers a high degree of scientific autonomy and opportunities to lead methodological innovations within an interdisciplinary research team.

Candidate Profile

Applicants must hold a PhD in Computational Neuroscience, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related field. The ideal candidate will have:

  • • Strong expertise in deep learning and modern neural network architectures (e.g. CNNs, RNNs, Transformers)
  • • Experience with large language models (LLMs), transformers, and/or generative models
  • • Background or strong interest in speech and language processing
  • • Experience working with neural data, particularly EEG and/or sEEG
  • • Proficiency in Python and deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, or Keras
  • • Familiarity with neuroimaging and signal processing libraries (e.g. MNE) is highly desirable

The ability to work independently and collaboratively in an international, interdisciplinary research environment is essential.

Research Environment

The University of Granada is a leading European research institution with strong international visibility. UGR is ranked 101st worldwide and 1st in Spain in Computer Science (Research.com).

The postdoctoral researcher will be embedded in the Research Centre for Information and Communication Technologies (CITIC-UGR), a multidisciplinary institute with over 250 researchers working in artificial intelligence, data science, signal processing, and bioinformatics, offering excellent computational infrastructure and international collaborations. The project also involves close collaboration with the Mind, Brain, and Behavior Research Centre (CIMCYC), a María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence and internationally recognized center in cognitive neuroscience.

Contract and Funding

  • • Duration: 3.5 years (full-time)
  • • Gross annual salary: approximately €38,000
  • • Expected start date: March 2026

Application Procedure

The official application process will be conducted through the University of Granada website and is expected to open in January 2026. Interested candidates are strongly encouraged to contact Dr. José A. González (joseangl@ugr.es) in advance, attaching their CV and a brief description of their background and research interests to discuss suitability for the position prior to submitting a formal application.
