The Microbial Ecology Group at the Institute of Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Biology, Jagiellonian University in Kraków seeks a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to contribute to exciting research on cellular dormancy (quiescence) in eukaryotic microorganisms, particularly baker's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). This project explores cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying phenotypic variability in quiescent cell populations and their impact on adaptation, antifungal resistance, and population dynamics. The successful candidate will lead the development and application of advanced microscopy techniques, microfluidic approaches, and single-cell analysis methods to investigate quiescence at individual cell and population levels.

Skills/Qualifications

  • • Essential: Proficiency in fluorescence microscopy techniques (confocal, wide-field, live-cell); experience with microfluidic systems or single-cell analysis; strong background in image analysis; demonstrated independent research ability; excellent analytical and critical thinking skills; ability to work in interdisciplinary teams; experience managing experimental data; proficiency in scientific writing; experience mentoring junior researchers; strong organizational skills.
  • • Desirable: Expertise in yeast biology or eukaryotic microbiology; knowledge of cell biology and cellular metabolism; flow cytometry experience; programming skills; mathematical modeling capabilities; publications in high-impact journals (IF > 3); grant writing experience.

Specific Requirements

  • • Doctoral degree in Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, or related field obtained not earlier than seven years ago
  • • Demonstrated scientific achievements with peer-reviewed publications
  • • 2-3 years practical experience with microscopy techniques
  • • Proficiency in at least two of: fluorescence microscopy, microfluidics, image analysis, flow cytometry
  • • Laboratory experience in microbiology or cell biology
  • • Independent experimental design and execution capability
  • • Openness to international collaboration
  • • Willingness to mentor doctoral and master's students
  • • Compliance with NCN requirements for researchers on projects
