The Wind Engineering and Renewable Energy Laboratory (WiRE) at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) is seeking two highly motivated Postdoctoral Researchers for a project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). The project aims to investigate the interaction between wind farms and the atmospheric boundary layer using a combination of wind-tunnel experiments, field measurements, and advanced numerical simulations. The ultimate goal is to gain fundamental understanding of the underlying physical mechanisms and to leverage this knowledge to develop predictive tools for optimizing the design and control of wind farms.

Research scope and responsibilities

Depending on background and expertise, the successful candidates will contribute to some or all of the following activities:

  • Study the structure and dynamics of wind turbine and wind farm flows under controlled conditions using the EPFL atmospheric boundary layer wind tunnel, including the effects of aerodynamic surface roughness, topography, and thermal stratification, and through field experiments employing scanning wind lidars.
  • Perform and analyze high-fidelity numerical simulations, including large-eddy simulations (LES), to investigate wind-farm–atmospheric boundary layer interactions.
  • Investigate wind-farm wake mitigation strategies, such as selective yaw control and power down-regulation of wind turbines.
  • Use experimental, field, and numerical data to validate, improve, and develop fast analytical wake models required for wind-farm design optimization and control applications.

Salary and benefits

EPFL offers highly competitive salaries, starting at more than CHF 88,000 per year, with the exact level depending on qualifications and prior experience, as well as excellent research infrastructure and an international working environment.

Qualifications and skills

Experimental Fluid Mechanics position:
- PhD in engineering, physics, atmospheric sciences, or a closely related field.
- Strong publication record and demonstrated experience in experimental fluid dynamics, turbulence, and wind energy.
- Experience with wind-tunnel measurement techniques such as particle image velocimetry (PIV), laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV), and hot- or cold-wire anemometry is highly desirable.

Computational Fluid Mechanics position:
- PhD in engineering, physics, atmospheric sciences, or a closely related field.
- Strong publication record and demonstrated experience in computational fluid dynamics, turbulence modeling, and wind energy.
- Experience with large-eddy simulation (LES), high-performance computing, and numerical modeling of atmospheric flows is highly desirable.

For both positions:
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research team.
- Excellent written and spoken English skills.
