A call is open for the award of a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (Reference ICETA 2026-01), at the Associated Laboratory for Green Chemistry – Clean Technologies and Processes (LAQV) – UID/50006/2025, with financial support from FCT/MCTES through national funds, at the institution REQUIMTE, under the following conditions:

Scientific Area (CNAEF): Biology – Genetics

Scientific Sub-area: Microbiology

Admission Requirements:

PhD in Molecular Genetics, Biomedical Sciences, or related fields, obtained less than three years prior to the application date. Candidates must demonstrate experience in the isolation and characterization of pathogenic bacteria, with advanced competence in the study of antimicrobial resistance using microbiology and molecular biology techniques, including DNA and RNA extraction and the application of PCR and qPCR for genetic analysis. Proficiency in proteomic analysis methodologies, including SDS-PAGE, MALDI-TOF MS, and nanoLC-MS/MS, for understanding cellular mechanisms underlying virulence and resistance is required.

The host institution where the research leading to the candidate’s PhD degree was carried out must be different from the Associated Laboratory for Green Chemistry – Clean Technologies and Processes.

If the PhD degree was awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law no. 66/2018 of August 16, and all required formalities must be completed by the date of signing the fellowship contract.

Work Plan: The candidate’s work plan will include the following tasks: (i) collection of samples from various origins (human, animal, and environmental); (ii) antimicrobial susceptibility testing; (iii) characterization of resistance genes; (iv) characterization of virulence genes; (v) whole-genome sequencing; (vi) analysis of compounds with potential antimicrobial activity; (vi) analysis of the biological activity of these compounds using proteomic profile analysis.

Workplace: LAQV – Associated Laboratory for Green Chemistry hub at UTAD, under the scientific supervision of Professor Doctor Gilberto Igrejas.

Duration of the Fellowship: The fellowship will have a duration of 12 months, possibly renewable for equal periods up to a maximum of 36 months, with an expected start date of March, 2026.

Monthly maintenance allowance: The amount of the fellowship corresponds to 1,851 euros, in accordance with the table of values for fellowships directly awarded by FCT, I.P. in Portugal (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Tabela_valores_SMM_2025.pdf), with payment made monthly by bank transfer.

Selection Methods:

The selection methods to be used are as follows:

1. 1. Curricular evaluation (40%), based on the relevance, quality, and quantity of scientific publications in the field, particularly articles indexed in Scopus as first author, participation in national and international scientific conferences on the topic, and the suitability of the CV to the area of the call;
2. 2. Experience in bacterial isolation techniques, phenotypic and genotypic characterization of antibiotic resistance, and antimicrobial susceptibility assessment, including PCR/qPCR and proteomics techniques (30%);
3. 3. Motivation letter (15%).

An interview will be conducted with the three candidates with the highest scores in criteria 1, 2, and 3, with a weighting of 15%.

The jury will not award the fellowship to candidates with a final classification below 50%.

Publicity/Notification of Results: The evaluation results will be publicized by posting at the Institution’s premises, and the approved candidate(s) will be notified by email.

Application Deadline: The call is open during the period of 26/01/2026 and 06/02/2026.
