Application for a PhD Fellowship
within the DECODE Project Ref. 101136914

Applications are invited for a PhD Fellowship in the scope of the EUTOPIA_HEALTH project entitled DECODE with the Ref. 101136914, funded by H2020 from European Commission.

Scientific Area: Biological Sciences / Biochemistry.

Academic degree: PhD in Biology, Biochemistry and related areas.

Other requisites:
• Less than 1 year after completion of the PhD;
• Experience in bacteriology, genomics and epidemiology documented in co-authored, peer-reviewed, publication;
• Experience in sample preparation and microscopy methods (e.g. TEM);
• Experience in molecular biology tools;
• Experience in analyzing data from multi-omic experiments (genomics and transcriptomics);
• Excellent planning and organization skills and proven interactions with international networks is valorised;
• Oral presentations at scientific meetings/workshops/congresses is valorised;
• International experience is highly valorised;
• Highly proficient in spoken and written English.

Working Plan: The work plan will investigate the role of endohyphal bacterial associates in shaping phenotypic plasticity, virulence, and drug resistance in Aspergillus fumigatus. The PhD fellow will participate in project meetings, conduct advanced experiments, and analyze a diverse collection of endobacterial partners with the strongest impact on fungal biology, using microbiological, molecular, and genomic approaches. Functional and metabolomic analyses, conducted in collaboration with consortium partners, will be used to uncover metabolic interdependencies and bacterial-derived factors influencing clinically relevant fungal traits. This work will provide mechanistic insights into fungal–bacterial interactions and inform future strategies to modulate fungal pathogenicity.

Working Place: The work will be carried out in the Applied and Environmental Mycology Lab at ITQB NOVA, under supervision of Professor Cristina Silva Pereira.

Duration of the fellowship: The fellowship will have the duration of 12 months, eventually renewed, expected to start in May 2026, on a full-time basis, according to Fellowship Regulations of Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, I.P.

Stipend amount: 1851,00 €, according to the table of values of grants awarded directly by the FCT, I.P. in the Country (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Tabela_valores_SMM_2025.p…) and payment will be made, monthly, through bank transfer.

Selection procedure: The evaluation procedures will be based on the analysis of the candidates´ Motivation Letter (1), detailed CV (2), short description (half a page) of the main findings of the 3 more relevant peer reviewed publications (3), and indication of the contact of three references (4). Short-listed candidates (top ranked) will be interviewed. The curriculum evaluation and the interview will weight 50% each.
