PROJECT: Mechanism of cyclic electron flow in cyanobacteria - from proteins to function

We are opening a post-doctoral position at the Laboratory of Photosynthesis to study key proteins and protein complexes involved in the molecular mechanism of cyclic electron flow (CEF) in cyanobacteria. The position is embedded within a large national project PHOTOMACHINES (2024–2028), focused on the development of novel photosynthetic chassis, a cyanobactrial platform strain for biotechnological applications. The successful candidate will aim to isolate and identify a hypothetical, currently uncharacterized protein supercomplex(es) responsible for cyclic electron flow in cyanobacteria. This project therefore requires strong expertise in membrane protein isolation combined with biophysical approaches for functional characterization. The successful completion of this task will provide key insights into protein components that tune and optimize cyanobacterial bioenergetics, contributing directly to biotechnological applications of Synechocystis PCC 6803 within the PHOTOMACHINES project.

Skills/Qualifications

  • • PhD in natural or life sciences (biochemistry, microbiology, plant biology, molecular biology, chemistry)
  • • Solid background in biochemistry, molecular biology, and biophysics of membrane proteins, ideally in photosynthesis
  • • Experience with cyanobacterial or algal physiology, omics approaches (proteomics, genomics), or advanced molecular biology is an advantage
  • • Ability to plan and execute controlled laboratory experiments
  • • Experience with data analysis and scientific writing, including a proven publication record
  • • Excellent communication skills in English
  • • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team
