While cancer nanomedicine has produced a myriad of nanoparticles with exciting properties, they are unable to fulfil their mission: less than 1% of these nanoparticles actually reach the tumor, largely because they are removed from circulation by macrophages in the liver and spleen. The ERC Advanced Grant project ROMEO aims to break this impasse by developing a new generation of nanoparticles (NPs) and extracelular vesicles (Evs) capable of evading macrophage capture while maintaining tumor targeting capabilities.


Highly skilled and motivated scientists are sought to develop this exciting Project.


Main tasks:

-Experiments of capture of NPs and EVs under confocal microscopy and in a microfluidic channel simulating a liver sinusoid. Analysis of capture kinetics. Analysis of macrophage saturation kinetics.

-Modification of NPs and EVs to alter uptake and saturation kinetics. Creation of artificial EVs with optimal characteristics. Validation in vitro and in vivo.

Skills/Qualifications

Qualifications/Skills

  • • PhD in Biotechnology, Cell Biology, Nanotechnology or similar. Chemistry with a strong interest in bio applications may also be considered.
  • • Expertise on at least one of the following areas: confocal microscopy, nanoparticle synthesis and characterization, cell biology, macrophages, cancer, extracellular vesicles, nanomedicine.
  • • Good English communication skills

Proven experience in:

  • • cell culture, confocal microscopy, basic and advanced cell biology techniques.

Research experience related to extracellular vesicles, macrophages, cancer and nanomedicine will be valued.

Selection process

Scoring Criteria

Section 1: Curriculum Vitae – Up to 50 points

  • • Academic record.
  • • Research experience: Publications, patents, conference presentations, and research stays abroad on topics related to the activities to be performed.
  • • Other valuable experience: Other activities demonstrating initiative and leadership, language proficiency, and computer/IT skills.

Section 2: Up to 25 points

  • • Experience related to Nanomedicine, specifically in the interaction between nanoparticles and cells.
  • • Synthesis and characterization of nanoparticles.
  • • Internalization mechanisms.
  • • Cell cultures, including cultures of macrophages and other phagocytic cells.

Section 3: Up to 25 points

  • • Experience related to extracellular vesicles (EVs).
  • • Isolation and characterization.
  • • Loading with nanoparticles and drugs.
  • • Modification of vesicles and creation of artificial vesicles.
