The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit, Science- and Technology-oriented Educational and Research Institution, based in Cyprus and governed by an acclaimed Board of Directors. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its five Research Centres, namely:

1. The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC)
2. The Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre (STARC)
3. The Energy Environment Water Research Centre (EEWRC)
4. The Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C)
5. The Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Centre (STeDI-RC)

Considerable cross-centre interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s scientific ethos.

The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated Researcher to join the Institute’s CaSToRC Centre on a full-time basis for its premises at Athalassas Campus.

The successful candidate will contribute to the research activities of the ERA Chair funded projectQUEST: Quantum Computing for Excellence in Science and Technology, under the leadership of the ERA Chairholder Karl Jansen. CyI offers a world-class, multidisciplinary research environment with strong interactions across physics, mathematics, and computer science.

Candidates are expected to have a strong background in quantum computing or quantum information, with research interests that may include (but are not limited to):

• Quantum algorithms and complexity

• Quantum many-body systems and quantum simulation

• Lattice gauge theories and high-energy or condensed-matter physics

• Number theory and cryptography in a quantum-computational context.

Depending on their expertise and interests, the successful candidate will work on applications ranging from fundamental physics to mathematically driven quantum algorithms and cryptography.

A significant degree of research independence, initiative, and the ability to contribute original ideas is expected.

Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to research activities including, but not limited to:

1. • Quantum computing for models in lattice gauge theories and condensed matter physics
2. • Basic research at the interface of Quantum Information, Quantum Foundations and Quantum field theory
3. • Quantum computing algorithms, in particular in variational quantum algorithms and/or quantum machine learning
4. • Applications to optimization problems and benchmarking of quantum computing hardware
5. • Quantum computing for Number Theory and Cryptography.
