The position is offered for a period of 1–3 years in the Department of Silicate Chemistry and Macromolecular Compounds, starting on 1 April 2026. The position is funded by the National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA) under the NAWA Polish Returns 2024 programme, within the project entitled “Electrifying Carbon Catalysts for Sustainable Organic Synthesis”, led by Dr Eng. Mateusz Odziomek (formerly a Group Leader at the Max Planck Institute in Potsdam).

OFFER DESCRIPTION:The newly established research group led by Dr. inż. Mateusz Odziomek at the Faculty of Materials Science and Ceramics (AGH UST) invites applications for a post-doctoral position (hired as Assistant Professor, polish Adiunkt badawczy) in the projectElectrifying Carbocatalysis for Sustainable Organic Synthesis” funded by the NAWA Polskie Powroty 2024 programme.

Dr. Mateusz Odziomek completed his PhD at ENS de Lyon (France), then spent 2.5 years as a postdoctoral researcher at Sorbonne Université (Paris), followed by five years at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces (Potsdam), including three years as a group leader. He has started a new research group at AGH since January 2026.

The group develops advanced nanoporous carbon materials as sustainable alternatives to noble-metal catalysts for (electro)(catalytic) transformations. Owing to their structural tunability, carbons can mediate a wide range of reactions, and when precisely engineered they exhibit enzyme-like reactivity with high efficiency and selectivity. The project concentrates on elucidating structure-performance relationships in carbon electrocatalysts and on designing highly active materials for organic electrosynthesis. For that reason, we will integrate the advanced infrared spectroscopy (including state of the art Quantum Cascade Laser-FTIR) to analyze the mechanisms and kinetics of electrochemical process at the carbon surface.

The project delve not only into applied aspects of electrosynthesis but particularly into the fundamental properties of carbonaceous materials under electrochemical polarization and the impact on catalytic reactivity.

The research tasks include:

  • • synthesis and structural design of heteroatom-doped carbons and single-atom active sites in carbon matrices,
  • • structural, microstructural and chemical analysis of materials
  • • analyzing the (electro)catalytic performance in various heterogenous organic reactions
  • • electrochemical characterization of carbon materials
  • • operando and in-situ characterization (Raman, FTIR, QCL-FTIR)
  • • mechanistic studies of proton-coupled electron transfer and microenvironment effects.
  • • design of electrode architecture for improved performance (including the shape and choice of binder)
