Among commodity materials, paper and board have the highest recycling rate (ca. 70%). Nevertheless, each recycling cycle induces the progressive degradation of cellulose fibres and the generation of cellulose debris which, together with paper/board processing additives (i.e. starch, glues, …) and mineral fillers, are not adapted for paper and board production and are rejected in the form of sludges with a neat loss of cellulosic material estimated to ca. 350000 t/year. Those rejects are a potential source of raw materials for applications other than paper production and large-scale 3D printing for construction applications represents a promising strategy for their valorization. While wood-derived materials for 3D printing have been extensively studied, the use of cellulose fibres sourced from the paper and cardboard recycling industry remains largely unexplored and often limited to the manufacturing of small objects.

This presents an opportunity to develop novel 3D-printable materials tailored for structural applications in construction and furniture manufacturing. Host laboratories. The proposed PostDoc position will be a part of the DEFI2R project supported by the research program France 2030 PEPR Recyclage. The selected candidate will work in tight collaboration of research teams of the Laboratories LGP2 (Process Engineering Laboratory for Biorefinery, Bio-
based Materials and Functional Printing, https://lgp2.grenoble-inp.fr/en ) and 3SR (Soils, solids, structures, risks, https://3sr.univ-grenoble-alpes.fr/en ) in Grenoble and LS2N (Laboratory of Digital Sciences, https://www.ls2n.fr in Nantes. The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to the development and optimization of innovative 3D-printed insulation panels derived from fibrous rejects within the framework of a Work Package of the DEFI2R project.

The main objective is to transform recovered fibrous materials into high-performance, eco- efficient construction products through formulation, process optimization, and prototyping. The researcher will :

-Formulate and characterize composite inks suitable for 3D printing, based on selected fibrous rejects
(decontaminated or untreated), and study their rheological and mechanical properties in both wet and dry states.
- Optimize the 3D printing process, including printing parameters and drying conditions, to ensure the
reproducibility, mechanical integrity, and insulating performance of the final panels.

- Contribute to the upscaling and demonstration of 3D-printed panels.

- Prepare technical reports and scientific deliverables, documenting formulations, process parameters, prototype performance, and process optimization outcomes.

- Disseminate and valorize results through publications in peer-reviewed journals, conference presentations, and collaboration with
industrial and academic project partners.

The position requires close collaboration with experts in materials science, process engineering, and additive manufacturing, as well as active participation in project meetings and reporting activities.
