Call open for applications for 1 research grant within the framework of project “Understanding Machine Learning Systems”, financed by Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto, under the following conditions:

Scientific Area: Machine Learning

Admission requirements: Candidates who cumulatively meet the following two requirements may apply for this grant:

Requirement 1:

- Be a student enrolled in a doctoral program in the area of Computer Science, Informatics Engineering, Artificial Intelligence or Data Science, or related area, a requirement to be duly proven at the time of signing the contract.

or

- To be enrolled in a non-academic degree course integrated in the educational project of a higher education institution, developed in association or cooperation with one or more R&D units, a requirement to be duly proven at the time of signing the contract.

and

Requirement 2:

• Hold a master’s degree in Computer Science/Informatics Engineering or related field.

If the degree has been awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions of the Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of august 16th, and any formalities established there must be fulfilled until the time of signing the contract.

Activity Outline:

The Scholarship holder will work on methods to improve understanding of how machine learning algorithms work.

Workplan:

• • Literature review
• • Design of an approach for the selected problem
• • Empirical evaluation of the proposed approach
• • Writing of a research paper

Legislation and regulations: Law Nº. 40/2004, of 18th August, in its current wording (Statutes of Scientific Research Fellow) and and Regulation of Research Grants of University of Porto.

This public notice is published pending the signature by the leader of the consortium of the Term of Acceptance for granting the project incentive, so FEUP will assess this circumstance at the time of awarding the grant, which may not occur.

Workplace: The work will be developed at the Department of Informatics Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), or Fraunhofer AICOS , under the scientific supervision of Professor Carlos Manuel Milheiro de Oliveira Pinto Soares.

Grant duration: Initial duration of 6 months, with the predicted starting date in April 2026, on an exclusive basis eventually renewable but never exceeding the project duration.

If the contracting procedures do not allow the scholarship to have a minimum duration of 3 consecutive months, in accordance with paragraph 2 of article 10 of the Research Regulation of Research Grants of University of Porto, the grant will not be awarded.

The eventual renewal of the scholarship will be carried out as determined in article 10 of the Regulation of Research Grants of University of Porto.

Stipend: The grant stipend amounts to 1.309,64 € according to the table of values of the grants awarded directly by FCT, I.P. in the Country.

The payment will be made by bank transfer.

Selection procedure:

The curriculum of the candidates (50%) will be evaluated based on the merit of the candidate, and the following factors will be assessed:

a) Academic training: Master in Computer Science, Informatics Engineering, or Artificial Intelligenece and Data Science - up to 5 points; Master in related areas – up to 3 points; Other Masters – 0 points;

b) Classification of academic education: average equal/greater than 16/20 – 5 points; average equal/greater than 14/20 and below 16/20 – 3 points; other values – 0 points;

c) Research Experience in Machine Learning and the topics of the project, including publications – up to 5 points; basic knowledge of machine learning – up to 3 points; no research experience nor knowledge of machine learning – 0 points;

d) Proficiency in the English language, to be assessed by the motivation letter – up to 5 points.

Candidates will be ranked on a scale of 1 to 20 points, with the three best-ranked candidates in the curriculum evaluation being admitted to the interview (50%), provided they score equal or above 16 points. In the interview (50%), topics related to the work plan, previous experience, motivation, and candidate's CV will be discussed.

If none of the candidates achieves a minimum final score of 16 points, the scholarship will not be awarded.
