APC Microbiome Ireland are currently recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher to join a programme investigating the effects of probiotics on brain development, behaviour, and brain barrier function during early life. Specifically, the research will focus on how timing and mode of delivery affect neuroendocrine pathways, barrier integrity, and subsequent behaviour, as well as whether the proposed treatments can mitigate the negative consequences of preterm delivery and caesarean section. This highly interdisciplinary program combines preclinical animal models (zebrafish and rodents) with molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry, and in vitro approaches to explore the impact of interventions on gut-brain communication and related health outcomes. The candidate will actively contribute to the programme’s development, support the achievement of project goals, and prepare presentations and reports. The role also involves collating data and assisting with grant submissions. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, a strong command of the English language, and be highly motivated to work within a multidisciplinary team. Salary is subject to Irish Public Sector guidelines.

Essential Qualifications/Experience:

  • PhD and publication record in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g. Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences, Nutritional Sciences, Physiology, Neuroscience, or a related discipline with a focus on microbiota-gut-brain axis).
  • Skilled in assessing behavioural outcomes, including communication (e.g., ultrasonic vocalizations), anxiety, memory, social behaviour, and behavioural despair in preclinical animal models.
  • Experience using zebrafish models and/or C-section mouse models to study microbiota and brain development.
  • Familiarity with in vitro techniques to study brain barrier integrity and cellular communication.
  • Expertise in experimental design, data analysis, and interpretation of complex datasets, including behavioural, biochemical, and molecular data.
  • Proficiency in measuring neuroendocrine, and neurotransmitter markers (e.g., corticosterone, serotonin, noradrenaline, GABA) using biochemical assays laboratory techniques (e.g. qRT-PCR, ELISAs assays).
  • Ability to effectively document findings, write scientific reports, and communicate results to multidisciplinary teams or stakeholders.
  • Understanding of microbiota-driven changes in immune, neuroendocrine, and neurotransmitter pathways that mediate microbiota-gut-brain communication (desirable).
  • In-depth understanding of how prebiotic and probiotic interventions influence gut microbiota composition and function (desirable).
