In the framework of the InnovFluor3.0 project funded by the Normandy Regional Council and by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), a postdoctoral research fellowship is available between CARMeN institute UMR6064, and SMS laboratory, UR3233 at University of Rouen Normandy (France).

Start: june 2026 for 18 Months

Main goal of the study: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a family of several thousand synthetic fluorinated compounds that have been widely used in industry since the 1950s. Their extreme persistence, mobility, and potential toxicity make them priority contaminants for health and environmental agencies. However, only a few dozen PFAS currently have validated analytical standards and targeted methods.

The majority of PFAS present in the environment remain unidentified, unquantified, and unregulated. Conventional targeted approaches are therefore insufficient to capture the true diversity of PFAS, their transformation products, and their precursors.

Low molecular weight PFAS such as TFA are particularly difficult to analyze and will be studied using ion chromatography (IC) coupled with mass spectrometry. At the same time IC or LC will be used for the selective detection of fluorinated species by ICP-MS. To this end, approaches involving the formation of BaF+ complexes will be implemented. Another technique, namely IC-combustion, will be used to quantify the total fluor content.

Results will be compared with those obtained by GC×GC-HRMS, TIMS-FTICR, and LC-MS/MS (those parts being done by other postdoctoral fellows funded by the project).

Skills/Qualifications

Strong analytical background in analytical chemistry, especially in chromatography and mass spectrometry. PhD or equivalent, in analytical chemistry.

The candidate must speak French or English, good writing in English is required and the candidate must be able to orally present in English.

An ability to work in team is required, as this project will gather 4 postdoctoral fellows working on same samples with different techniques.

Specific Requirements

CARMeN laboratory is ZRR (restricted area). The final recruitment will be validated by the obtention of the access from the senior defense official.
