This is NTNU
NTNU is a broad-based university with a technical-scientific profile and a focus in professional education. The university is located in three cities with headquarters in Trondheim.
At NTNU, 9,000 employees and 43,000 students work to create knowledge for a better world.
You can find more information about working at NTNU and the application process here.
About the position
Are you ready to take your research career to the next level? We offer an exciting 3-year postdoctoral position that gives you the opportunity to develop a strong profile as researcher. You will also gain valuable experience that might be relevant for your further career. The position will, in particular, involve research on and the further development of pedagogical approaches within mathematics education in teacher education programmes at the master’s level.
The position is affiliated with the research group Teaching Practices in Mathematics Teacher Education. The research area for the position will be particularly focused on the master’s level part of primary and lower secondary teacher education, with the tentative title: ‘Master’s courses in mathematics education – what can and should they include?’ The successful candidate will work in close collaboration with other members of the research group. Through the MaTEN project, the research group has partners both nationally and internationally with whom collaboration may be relevant.
Your immediate leader will be the Head of the Section for Mathematics.
About the project
The project concerns master’s courses in Norwegian mathematics teacher education. A master’s degree in primary and lower secondary teacher education with a specialization in mathematics is intended to provide students with subject-didactic and profession-oriented specialization, while also constituting an academic pathway that qualifies for further academic work. This dual intention reflects the persistent tension between practice and theory in teacher education, and the postdoctoral project will engage with these issues and develop innovative solutions to the challenges that arise.
In general, there have been very few studies on the master’s level in mathematics teacher education in Norway, and those that do exist typically focus on the master’s thesis itself. In contrast to the initial years of teacher education, the master’s component is only loosely regulated by national policy documents, and practices likely vary considerably across institutions. The project will investigate and map these practices, partly based on data collected in spring 2026 through the MaTEN project, and partly through its own studies (e.g., interviews, document analyses, and observation). In addition, the postdoctoral researcher will be able to initiate intervention(s) in one or more master’s courses offered at NTNU.
Theoretically, the project will have its overall framing in concepts from Hammerness (2005), who describes teacher education in terms of five elements: visions of what constitutes good teaching; tools for teaching (both material and theoretical); understandings of mathematics and the learning of mathematics; practices to be enacted; and dispositions towards mathematics as a subject and the teaching of mathematics. A mapping study will examine how these aspects are expressed across different courses. The project will also draw on more specific theoretical frameworks, for example, the Anthropological Theory of the Didactic (ATD; Chevallard, 2019). In ATD, knowledge is understood in terms of how it moves (is transposed) between different contexts (institutions). Mathematics teacher education can be seen as one such institution, in which participants relate to knowledge of mathematics and knowledge of mathematics education—knowledge developed in academic institutions. At the same time, teacher education is closely connected to schools, which are themselves institutions engaging with mathematical knowledge transposed from academia. Another possible theoretical framework that accommodates both individual learning and institutional perspectives is CHAT (Cultural-Historical Activity Theory; Engeström, 2019). Members of the research group have previously written about mathematics teacher education using both of these theoretical perspectives.
