A tender is hereby opened for the award of one Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (BIPD) within the scope of the service provision project for the Brazilian company SAMARCO Mineração S.A. (2.15.400.36, CV 172/2025), under the Department of Materials and Ceramic Engineering, as well as the R&D unit CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials, under the following conditions: 

1. Scientific Area: Chemistry

2. Financing Source: Service Provision Agreement with SAMARCO Mineração S.A.

3. Admission Requirements: 

- PhD in Chemistry.

4. Other requirements:

- Experience in sample preparation and characterisation using techniques such as SEM-EDS, XRD and Raman spectroscopy;

- Experience in structural/crystallographic analysis, including proficiency in software such as PowderCell and/or UnitCell;

- Experience in hydrometallurgical processes and metal recovery;

- Knowledge and/or experience in functional materials for energy applications, including thermoelectric materials, will be valued.

If the qualification has been conferred by a foreign higher education institution it must be recognized by a Portuguese higher education institution, under the terms of the provisions of article 25 of Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of August 16th, which approves the legal regime of recognition of academic degrees and diplomas of Higher Education, attributed by foreign higher education institutions, and of paragraph e) of no. 2 of article 4 of Decree-Law no. 60/2018, of August 3rd, and any formalities established therein must be fulfilled by the date of the hiring act.

5. Eligibility: Applicants are eligible if have obtained their doctoral degree less than 3 years ago and who meet the requirements of paragraph 2 of article 2 of the Research Grant Holder Statute, as defined by Decreto-Lei n.º 123/2019, de 28 de agosto, and also the regulations established in article 8 of the University of Aveiro's Scientific Research Grant Regulations. Research Grants can only be awarded if the following requirements are cumulatively met:

a) The PhD degree must have been obtained within the three years prior to the date of submission of the scholarship application;

b) The postdoctoral research must be carried out at a host institution different from the institution where the PhD degree research work was developed;

c) The research activities do not require postdoctoral experience;

d) The research activities must have a development and execution period equal to or less than three years;

e) The scholarship holder must not exceed, with the signing of the scholarship contract in question, including possible renewals, an accumulated period of three years in this type of scholarship, whether consecutive or intermittent.

6. Work plan:  Development and optimisation of an integrated process for the valorisation of metals from ores from the mining industry.

7. Applicable legislation and regulations: Research Fellow Statute, as amended by Decree-Law No. 123/2019, of August 28th; Scientific Research Grant Regulation of the University of Aveiro, Regulation No. 292/2020, published in Diário da República No. 61, Series II, of March 26th; Decree-Law No. 66/2018, of August 16th (Legal regime of recognition of academic degrees and diplomas of higher education awarded by foreign higher education institutions).

8. Workplace: The work will be carried out at the Department of Materials and Ceramic Engineering of the University of Aveiro, under the scientific supervision of Doctor Daniela Vanessa Rosendo Lopes.

9. Duration of the grant(s): The grant will have a duration of 4 months, starting in September 2026, and may be renewed for additional periods, up to the maximum limit of approved funding. Under no circumstances shall it exceed the limits defined in nos. 5 and 6 of article 9, of Regulation no. 292/2020, of February 28th, published in Diário da República, no. 61, Series II, of March 26th (Scientific Research Grant Regulation of the University of Aveiro). 

10. Amount of monthly maintenance allowance: The amount of the grant corresponds to 1901.00€, according to the table of values of monthly maintenance allowances, set out in Appendix III of the Scientific Research Grant Regulation of the University of Aveiro, subject to any updates that may occur and are applicable. The fellow may also be reimbursed for the amount corresponding to the Voluntary Social Security, in case of adherence to this plan

11. Selection methods: The selection methods to be used will be the curriculum vitae assessment and an interview as option. The curriculum assessment, weighted from 0 to 20 points, will be carried out according to the following criteria and weights:

- Suitability and merit of the candidate’s CV, considering the scientific area of the call for applications (90%).

- Cover letter (10%).

The Interview selection method may be used if the jury does not consider itself duly qualified to decide based on the Curricular Assessment. If there is an interview, the final evaluation will be weighted with 50% for the curriculum evaluation and 50% for the interview.

The jury reserves the right not to admit candidates with a classification lower than 10 points on a scale of 0-20 points for interview, as well as not to award the scholarship if none of the candidates has a minimum final score of 10 points.

12. Composition of the Selection Jury: President: Doctor Daniela Vanessa Rosendo Lopes; Jury members: Doctor Andrei Kavaleuski and Doctor Aleksey Yaremchenko; Substitute members: Doctor Maksim Starykevich and Professor Doctor Maria Georgina Macedo Miranda.

13. Deadline for applications and how to submit applications: The call is open from July 9th to July 22th 2026, and only applications submitted within the deadline will be admitted. 

Applications must be formalized by sending a letter of application accompanied by the following documents: Curriculum Vitae, certificate of qualifications or declaration of honour, application form, cover letter and supporting documents considered relevant. They shall also indicate the e-mail address to which by such indication they accept to be notified for all purposes within this procedure.

14. Form of publication/notification of results: The results of the evaluation shall be made public no later than 60 working days after the closing date for submission of applications and shall be notified to the applicants. The candidates are informed, in a prior hearing, under the terms established in the Code of Administrative Procedure, of the probable meaning of the final decision, and may, within 10 working days of this notification, express their opinion on this decision. The final results may be appealed to the Rector, to be submitted within 10 working days from the respective notification.

15. Tender duration: The final ranking list of candidates will be valid until August 2026 for the purpose of constituting a reserve list for selection.
