CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR 1 (ONE) POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP (BIPD), AS PART OF THE PROJECT “FOUR4ALL: EVIDENCE AND PATHWAYS FOR INCLUSIVE, SUSTAINABLE AND COMPETITIVE WORKING TIME REDUCTION IN EUROPE” (REF. HORIZON‑CL2‑2025‑01), CURRENTLY UNDERWAY AT THE FACULTY OF ECONOMICS AND MANAGEMENT, UNIVERSITY OF PORTO-BOLS-FEP-26-9.
This call for applications is now open for the award of 1 (one) Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (BIPD) to carry out R&D activities as part of the project “FOUR4ALL: Evidence and Pathways for Inclusive, Sustainable and Competitive Working Time Reduction in Europe” (Ref. HORIZON‑CL2‑2025‑01), funded by the European Commission and currently underway at the Faculty of Economics and Management, University of Porto, under the following conditions:
1. Academic field(s): Sociology, Management, Human Resource Management, Economics.
2. Entry requirements:
All individuals of legal age who meet the following requirements, as evidenced by supporting documentation, may apply for this scholarship:
- 1. A PhD in Sociology, Management, Human Resource Management or Economics – completed less than 3 (three) years ago;
- 2. A Master’s degree in Sociology, Management, Human Resource Management or Economics;
- 3. To have carried out the research leading to the award of the PhD at an institution other than the host institution (Faculty of Economics and Management, University of Porto).
3. Preferred qualifications:
a) Research experience in the following areas: work organization and working time; human resources management; quality of life and well-being;
b) Experience in analysing quantitative data (e.g. European databases, structural equation modelling) and qualitative data (interviews, case studies);
c) Fluency in English.

1 Where an academic qualification has been awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must be recognised by a Portuguese higher education institution, in accordance with the provisions of Article 25 of Decree-Law No 66/2018 of 16 August, which approves the legal framework for the recognition of academic degrees and higher education diplomas awarded by foreign higher education institutions, and Article 4(2)(e) of Decree-Law No 60/2018 of 3 August; any formalities laid down therein must be completed by the date of the contract.
4. Work plan:
4.1. The main tasks to be carried out under the fellowship will be:
- 1. Participation in the statistical and qualitative analysis of data on the reduction of working time, using databases of companies, workers and European surveys, as well as conducting national and international case studies, including the collection, processing and interpretation of quantitative and qualitative information.
- 2. Participation in the production of scientific articles, academic reports and policy briefs;
- 3. Support for the organisation of workshops, events and co-creation activities with stakeholders (companies and other organisations, trade unions, policy-makers);
- 4. Participation in academic conferences, business events and knowledge dissemination activities within the scope of the Four4All project;
- 5. Collaboration in the development and maintenance of the Four4All Knowledge Hub (a dissemination platform based on scientific knowledge and AI).
5. Applicable legislation and regulations:
The selection process and the award of the scholarship are governed by the provisions set out in the University of Porto’s Research Scholarship Regulations – approved by Regulation No. 582/2026, published in the Diário da República, Series II, No. 96, of 19 May; the legal framework for the recognition of academic degrees and higher education qualifications awarded by foreign higher education institutions; the Code of Administrative Procedure (CPA), approved by Decree-Law No. 4/2015 of 7 January; and Statute of the Research Fellow (EBI), approved by Law No. 40/2004 of 18 August, in its current version published by Decree-Law No. 123/2019 of 28 August; and other applicable regulations.
6. Place of work:
The research project will be carried out at the Faculty of Economics and Management of the University of Porto, and/or other locations necessary for its execution, under the academic supervision of Professor Pedro Rui Mazeda Gil and Professor Sofia Alexandra Soares de Miranda Ferreira Cruz, of the Faculty of Economics and Management of the University of Porto.
7. Duration of the fellowship:
The BIPD will last for 24 months on a full-time basis and may be renewed for further periods, in accordance with institutional needs, up to the deadline for the implementation of the work plan, but not exceeding the project completion date and, under no circumstances, exceeding the limits set out in Regulation No. 582/2026 for the type of fellowship in question.
8. Amount of the monthly living allowance:
8.1. The amount of the monthly living allowance under the scholarship is €1,901.00, in accordance with Annex I of the University of Porto’s Research Scholarship Regulations.
8.2. Payment will be made by the Faculty of Economics and Management of the University of Porto by bank transfer. In addition to this allowance, the scholarship holder will be covered by personal accident insurance.
8.3. The scholarship holder may join the Voluntary Social Security scheme (applicable to scholarship contracts of six months or more); this is optional (not compulsory) and the reimbursement corresponds to the first bracket of the contribution base.
9. Selection methods
9.1. The selection methods are as follows: CV assessment (AC)/ the candidate’s merit, weighted at 70 per cent, and, optionally, supplemented by an interview (ENT) weighted at 30 per cent, which will only take place if the Selection Panel considers that the CV/MC does not adequately clarify the candidates’ actual skills or enable them to identify which candidate is best suited to the post and the duties to be performed. If an interview is held, it will be conducted with the three highest-ranked candidates in the CV/MC.
9.2. Each member of the Selection Panel assesses the selection methods on a scale of 0 to 20 points.
9.3. Criteria and weighting factors for the curriculum assessment (CA) / Candidate’s merit
- 1. Topic of the doctoral thesis: aligned with the project topic (up to 10 points); not aligned with the project topic (0 points);
- 2. Master’s degree average: 16 marks or above out of 20 (up to 4 marks); 14 marks or above out of 20 (1 mark); less than 14 marks out of 20 (0 marks);
- 3. Scientific publications: at least 1 article published or submitted to an international journal, related to the project’s theme (up to 3 points); at least 1 paper presented at an international conference related to the project’s theme (up to 1 point); articles not aligned with the project’s theme (0 points); papers not aligned with the project’s theme (0 points);
- 4. Relevant experience in scientific research: aligned with the project’s theme (up to 3 points).
9.4. Candidates who have received a score of 15 points or less will be excluded at the AC stage.
9.5. The following are the criteria and weighting factors for the interview (ENT), should one take place:
- 1. Proficiency in English (0 to 5 points)
- 2. Demonstrated experience in the areas specified in the preferential conditions under points a) and b) (0 to 15 points).
9.6. Candidates may request authorisation from the chair of the Selection Panel to have their interview conducted via videoconference, stating their reasons for doing so.
9.7. Failure to attend the interview stage of the selection process is deemed to constitute withdrawal from the competition, and candidates will be excluded from the competition.
9.8. The Final Mark (FM) will be calculated using the following formula: FM = (0.70_AC) + (0.30_ENT).
9.9. Candidates who have achieved a Final Mark of 15 points or less will be excluded from the competition.
9.10. This competition is intended exclusively to fill the vacancy specified. In the event that no candidate demonstrates that they possess the profile required to carry out the work plan described above within the scope of this project, the Selection Panel reserves the right not to fill the vacancy.
10. Composition of the Selection Panel:
Chair: Dr Sofia Alexandra Soares de Miranda Ferreira Cruz, Associate Professor with Aggregation at the Faculty of Economics and Management, University of Porto;
1st standing member: Dr Ana Rita Ramos Fontinha, Associate Professor at Henley Business School, University of Reading;
2nd full member: Dr Pedro Rui Mazeda Gil, Associate Professor with Aggregation at the Faculty of Economics and Management, University of Porto;
Alternate member: Dr Pedro Batista Maia Gomes, Full Professor at Birkbeck College, University of London;
Alternate member: Dr Ana Isabel Couto da Silva, Assistant Lecturer at the Faculty of Economics, University of Porto.
11. Submission procedure and deadline:
11.1. Applications must be submitted by 27 July 2026 (23:59 – Lisbon).
11.2. Applications must be submitted via the online application system, available on the APPLY website: https://app.apply.up.pt Ref. BOLS-F UP-26-9.
11.3. The application must be accompanied by supporting documents proving compliance with the conditions set out in this Notice, namely:
- 1. Curriculum vitae;
- 2. Letter of motivation, stating availability to commence the work plan;
- 3. Copy of the certificate(s) for the required qualifications and recognition of the degree if it was obtained from a foreign higher education institution (this recognition may be submitted by the time of appointment);
- 4. Declaration of eligibility (attached).
11.4. Applicants may also submit any other documents they consider relevant to the assessment of their merits.
11.5. Failure to meet the deadline for submitting the application, or the failure to submit, or the late submission of, the documents referred to in subparagraphs (a) to (d) of paragraph 11.3 shall result in the exclusion of the application.
11.6. The documents mentioned in paragraph 11.3 should preferably be submitted in a non-editable format.
11.8. The Selection Panel may, whenever it deems necessary, request candidates to submit supplementary documents relating to the facts set out in the curriculum vitae submitted, setting a deadline for this purpose, as follows:
- 1. the documentation referred to is not intended for the submission of information not mentioned in the curriculum vitae, nor for the inclusion of missing documents required by this Notice;
- 2. all candidates shall be informed that supplementary documentation has been requested.
12. False statements:
Any false statements made by candidates will be punished in accordance with the law.
13. Method of publication/notification of results:
13.1. Candidates will be notified of the minutes relating to the application assessment stage(s) by email, sent to the address they have provided for this purpose, with a delivery confirmation.
13.2. Notifications shall be made by email, in accordance with Articles 112(1)(c) and 113(5) of the CPA.
13.3. In accordance with the provisions of Article 121 et seq. of the CPA, once notified, candidates have 10 working days to submit their comments in writing.
14. Reserve list:
A reserve list will be drawn up based on the final ranking list, which may be used should the candidate ranked first withdraw. The faculty’s highest authority reserves the right to call upon the next candidate on the list, and so on, until the vacancy is filled. This reserve list may be used for a maximum period of 12 months from the date of approval of the final ranking list.
