By order issued by the Director General of the Telecommunications Institute on July 17, 2026, it was approved to open an international call to select one (1) candidate researcher in the scientific scope of the project PIONEER-PON, under the scope of a term contract, with a termination date undetermined, overseen by Portuguese Labour Code. Job description:

• • Design the electronics supporting E/O and O/E conversion (laser/modulator drivers, TIAs, signal conditioning), together with peripheral power and digital control circuits;
• • Develop PCB evaluation/test boards that enable laboratory characterization of the ASIC and its photonic interfaces;
• • Support thermal and electrical validation of the physical form factor (SFP56/SFP-DD);
• • Lead the Test & Measurement effort for functional verification and laboratory bring-up of the integrated module — power-up, functional block testing, and validation of operating modes (GPON/XGS-PON, combo, quad) and energy efficiency;
• • Characterize and analyze key performance metrics such as BER, jitter, signal integrity and optical sensitivity, including debugging and parametrization in coordination with the consortium partners;
• • Produce technical documentation and engineering deliverables aligned with the project's milestones and contribute to dissemination of results.

About the position

PhD researcher position at Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT) within the PIONEER-PON project, a co-promoted national R&D initiative developing the first European pluggable OLT based on PIC and CMOS ASIC technology for converged passive optical networks (GPON/XGS-PON, configurable in single, combo and quad modes). The selected candidate will join IT's effort in the development of complementary and support electronics for the OLT module, contributing to circuit design, evaluation/test boards, and the functional and electrical verification of the integrated system. This is a junior research position suited to a recent PhD graduate looking to develop a career in advanced telecommunications electronics and electronic-photonic co-integration. 

The approximate duration of the contract will be 25 months, depending on the completion of the tasks identified above, and this period is not necessarily linked to the duration of the specific project.
