Current studies have shown that Alzheimers Disease is not only due to problems in neuronal function. Astrocytes and microglial cells, neuronal support cells in the brain, have an essential contribution to neurodegeneration, as they facilitate the accumulation of beta amyloid

and neuronal cell death. Yet, it is not clearly understood how the cellular crosstalk between glia and neurons is regulated at the molecular level nor how it drives neurodegeneration in AD. In this project, we will use iPSCs to implement a complex tri-culture system including

neurons, astrocytes and microglia cells to investigate the impact of AD on the function and the interactions of individual cell types.

The candidate will be responsible for optimizing and implementing a tri-culture system containing iPSC-derived neurons, astrocytes and microglia cells and their characterization at the molecular, functional and single-cel level to dissect the cellular interactions driving neurodegeneration in AD. Additionally, the candidate will be responsible for managing the wet-lab daily and supervise and train junior researchers.
