The unit carries out dedicated analysis and tailored scientific developments adapted to EU policies needs that are delivering on the EU Green Industrial Deal1, the Industrial Decarbonisation Accelerator Act2, climate neutrality and Circular Economy ambitions3, considering also the EU competitiveness agenda4.

In particular, the Commission is currently planning the revision of the recommendations for the EU Environmental Footprint (EF) methods5, with the overall purpose to: review and simplify existing rules; foster the harmonisation of the EF methods with other carbon and environmental footprint accounting (as present in the EU legislation and/or other schemes developed by industries and academia); boost overall the competitiveness of green industries.

Within this context, the jobholder will contribute to the development of science-based analysis for the review of environmental footprint accounting in the EU policies, by tackling methodological aspects as related to life cycle inventory, impact assessment and data issues.

The work will imply the revision of circularity aspects in the EF methods (including the revision of the Circular Footprint Formula and of strategies and data for the modelling of circular aspects in the EF); the conduction of Life Cycle Assessment studies on dedicated products and sectors, and the analysis of (energy, material and waste) flows along the life cycles of key supply chains (as related to critical raw materials, food products and renewable energy). This work is supposed to support the development of the European Platform on LCA6 and the life cycle Data Network7. The research aims also at exploring the possibility to expand the current Life Cycle Impact Assessment methods to better capture aspects as related impacts due to, among the others, water use, (biotic and abiotic) resource use, microplastics releases, biodiversity.

This work is carried out also in line of granting harmonisation and simplification across EU policies, to identify workable solutions, trade-offs and stimulate integration and coherence among EU policies. This would be particular relevant as for life cycle aspects in the EU Battery Regulation, the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, the Critical Raw Materials Act, the Green Claims Directive proposal, the EU Emission Trading System and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism.

The work is highly interdisciplinary, and the selected candidate will liaise with different related research teams and stakeholders inside and outside the Commission supporting this policy analysis.
