Research title: Non-equilibrium dynamics and activity of particles in interaction with fields

Fields of the research activity: Statistical Physics


Description of the research project: Many statistical systems can be modeled, at the mesoscale, in terms of a field that describes the fluctuations of a physical property in space and time. The dynamics of these fields can be studied by introducing a tracer particle, such as a colloid, which interacts with them. In fact, from the dynamics of the tracer, one can infer the properties of the field. In active systems, an additional challenge arises because the field-particle interactions violate detailed balance, as in the case of chemotactic particles. These produce a chemical species diffusing in the surrounding environment, but from which they might be repelled, making their dynamics non-equilibrium and non-Markovian. The project aims at studying the dynamics of both active and passive particles in contact with both active and passive fields, in order to characterize the resulting stochastic dynamics.


Applicants are required to submit a short research project (one page max), to be uploaded on the PICA platform when submitting the application.
