The University of Liverpool’s School of the Arts invites expressions of interest for the 2025 MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowship scheme. With the UK’s full association to Horizon Europe, the UK is now eligible to host fellows as an Associated Country and receive funding directly from the European Commission. The MSCA fellowships offer opportunities for outstanding early career researchers who wish to gain experience in other countries, acquire new skills through advanced training and develop their careers.

The Department of Philosophy at Liverpool has a long history of combining research excellence in core areas of philosophy with innovative work at the frontiers of the discipline: from politics to spirituality, Chinese philosophy to speculative futures, neo-Platonism to feminism.

The University of Liverpool has an international reputation for excellence in music research. Research in the Department of Music encompasses the broad spectrum of music studies, from the Middle Ages to the present day, and from musicology to cutting-edge creative practice, performance, and audience research. Our department is also home to two research centres: the Interdisciplinary Centre for Composition and Technology (ICCaT) and the Institute of Popular Music (IPM), which provides a hub for interdisciplinary research on popular music, broadly defined.

Today the work of the Department of Music has research strengths in a wide range of areas that include: 

• Popular music (we welcome projects related to the IPM Archive)
• Musicology (early music, 19th-century music, 20th-century music, music in film and games)
• Analysis and aesthetics
• Music psychology and audience research

The School forms part of the School of the Arts, one of the four Schools in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The School also includes the departments of Communications and Media, English, Philosophy and Architecture.

Those interested in applying for a MSCA Fellowship at the University of Liverpool should identify a potential supervisor in the Department of Music and contact them to discuss their project and ensure the identified supervisor is happy to support them. 

Candidates should then work with their supervisor to prepare an Expressions of Interest (EoI), using the appropriate EoI template available on this Faculty webpage. Only EoIs completed on the adequate University of Liverpool EoI template will be accepted. This should be submitted to hssrke@liverpool.ac.uk by Wednesday, 14th May 2025. A Faculty-level selection panel will compile a shortlist of candidates, and all candidates and their supervisors will be informed of the panel’s decision by Friday, 13thJune 2025. Selected candidates will be supported with the further development of their application.
