The University of Liverpool’s School of the Arts invites expressions of interest for the 2025 MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowship scheme. With the UK’s full association to Horizon Europe, the UK is now eligible to host fellows as an Associated Country and receive funding directly from the European Commission. The MSCA fellowships offer opportunities for outstanding early career researchers who wish to gain experience in other countries, acquire new skills through advanced training and develop their careers.

The Department of Philosophy at Liverpool has a long history of combining research excellence in core areas of philosophy with innovative work at the frontiers of the discipline: from politics to spirituality, Chinese philosophy to speculative futures, neo-Platonism to feminism.

We value plurality, innovation and creativity. For us, philosophy is a set of approaches and methods that can help us to make sense of whatever is puzzling, perplexing or interesting in the world around us. 

The Department is home to many externally funded research projects. Four research groups (see below) support our programme of visiting speakers, workshops, reading groups and postgraduate activities, and foster connections with interdisciplinary research centres and global networks of scholars.

• Language and Experience in 20th Century Philosophy: Connecting modern philosophy of language with themes in pre-modern and post-Kantian thought.
• Ethics, Law and Justice in Private and Public Life: Studying the rights, liberties and normative principles that structure a just society.
• Speculative Futures: Mind, Meaning, and the Human Condition: Foundational philosophical dilemmas revisited in the light of technological change.
• Social Imagination Collective: Approaching social imagination through aesthetics, epistemology, and philosophy of science and emotions.

The School forms part of the School of the Arts, one of the four Schools in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The School also includes the departments of Communications and Media, English, Music and Architecture.

Those interested in applying for a MSCA Fellowship at the University of Liverpool should identify a potential supervisor in their chosen Department and contact them to discuss their project and ensure the identified supervisor is happy to support them. 

Candidates should then work with their supervisor to prepare an Expressions of Interest (EoI), using the appropriate EoI template available on this Faculty webpage. Only EoIs completed on the adequate University of Liverpool EoI template will be accepted. This should be submitted to hssrke@liverpool.ac.uk by Wednesday, 14th May 2025. A Faculty-level selection panel will compile a shortlist of candidates, and all candidates and their supervisors will be informed of the panel’s decision by Friday, 13thJune 2025. Selected candidates will be supported with the further development of their application.
