La Rochelle University is recruiting a post-doctoral fellow in "territorial governance of the ecological transition" on a fixed-term contract for one year as part of the Brouage marsh observatory project.
Employer description
In a higher education and research landscape that has been profoundly reshaped for more than a decade, La Rochelle Université has chosen to structure its research around a thematic by positioning its scientific and academic strengths on societal and environmental issues. This approach has led to the creation of a teaching and research institute called the LUDI Institute, SmUCS in English (Smart Urban Coastal sustainability), operational since the 1st September 2021.
Bringing together all the laboratories, all the PhD students and most of the institution's masters programmes. This institute aims to address the many scientific issues raised by the anthropisation of the coastal area by facilitating decompartmentalised and interdisciplinary approaches, based on a proactive policy of innovation and dissemination of results, without forgetting the fundamental principles of ethics and scientific integrity.
The creation of the LUDI Institute is surrounded by two other important projects, namely the EU-CONEXUS European university, a network of European partner universities sharing a common speciality, and the CampusInnov site initiative, intended to establish a culture of innovation in both training and research.

Project background
Three laboratories at La Rochelle University - the LIttoral ENvironnement et Sociétés (LIENSs, UMRi CNRS 7266) laboratory, the Centre d'Etudes Biologiques de Chizé (CEBC, UMR CNRS 7372) and the Laboratoire Informatique, Image et Interaction (L3i, Institut LUDI) - in collaboration with a number of partners in the region, have set up an "Integrated observatory of the land-sea continuum of a socio-ecosystem in transition in the face of global change" on the Brouage marsh site.
Built in line with the objectives of sustainable development in coastal areas set by the Nouvelle Aquitaine Region, the observatory aims to conduct excellent interdisciplinary research to deepen our understanding of the functioning and future evolution of coastal socio-ecosystems using a systemic approach, along the land-sea continuum, which is necessary for informed management of these areas. This observatory will make it possible to identify interactions and feedback loops between the various components of the Brouage socio-ecosystem, as well as the action levers available to the various stakeholders to maintain the overall health of the marsh in the long term. The aim is to provide a scientific basis, data and useful tools for the governance of the marsh's socio-ecosystem.
This site is a particularly interesting area to study because of the environmental qualities that motivated the creation of this observatory, but also because of the various projects that are being carried out there. In 2021, local stakeholders have launched an Opération Grand Site project for the Brouage marshes, with the aim of preserving and developing one of the richest and most emblematic wetlands in France, and ultimately obtaining the Grand Site de France label. At the same time, the Brouage marshland lies within the boundaries of the future "Marais des littoraux Charentais" Regional Nature Park (PNR), the creation of which was approved at the end of 2024. These projects reflect the strong ambitions of local stakeholders in terms of the challenges of ecological transition, but also the complexity of governance.
Job description
The post-doctoral researcher recruited will be responsible for conducting a qualitative field study in the Brouage area. He or she will play a key role in analysing the territorial governance of this area and the various issues linked to the different ecological transition projects being implemented there.
The aim of the project will be to identify the territorial policies pursued at different levels that play a part in the political regulation of the Brouage area, and hence in determining its socio-ecological trajectory. The aim will be to identify these policies, the players involved and the issues at stake, and to highlight the points of linkage and/or conflict. More specifically, an in-depth qualitative analysis will be used to shed light on the shared or competing conceptions of ecological transition held by the various players involved in the Grand Site de Brouage projects and, more broadly, the future 'coastal marshes' NRP, of which it is a part.
To meet the objectives of the post, the candidate will have to :
- Conduct a survey of identified stakeholders (interviews, participation in events, etc.).
- To monitor this study in partnership with the various stakeholders (scientific and non-scientific) in the Brouage observatory project.
- Contribute to the drafting of summary reports for stakeholders
- Contribute to the academic use of the data and analyses produced.
Recruitment:
Category: A ; fixed-term contract
Placement: La Rochelle Université - Littoral Environment and Societies Laboratory - LIENSs UMR 7266
If the candidate obtained his or her doctorate less than three years ago, a postdoctoral contract may be offered. After 3 years, an equivalent contract will be offered, with reference to research engineers.
Working hours: full-time
Remuneration: INM 522 index, i.e. €2569 gross/month.
Recruitment open to anyone with a RQTH (Qualified Health and Disability certificate).
