  • having relevant scientific achievements;
  • taking active part in scientific life.

Additional requirements and expectations

We are recruiting two post-doctoral fellows, who can contribute to the development and implementation of biophysical/biochemical methodologies for the detection of the binding of small molecules and their impact on the dynamics of protein/DNA assemblies (chromatin). These scientists should have a strong skillset in biochemical and biophysical research that includes the overexpression/purification and characterization of proteins and/or nucleic acids. In particular, individuals are sought who have experience with surface-based molecular detection methods (SPR, BLI) and/or fluorescence-based methods, which include microscale thermophoresis, differential scanning fluorimetry (thermal shift analysis), FRET, polarization/anisotropy analysis, etc.

Project Title

Opus 27, NCN, A Compound Screening Platform for the Discovery of Histone- and Nucleosome-Targeting Agents.”, PSP: K/NCN/000477.

Project description

The research group (Davey lab: https://mcb.uj.edu.pl/en_GB/davey-lab-chromatin-technology) is based at the Malopolska Centre of Biotechnology, in the lively and international city of Krakow, Poland.

Our DNA is packaged by a roughly equal mass of histone proteins into chromatin, in which the many millions of repeating units are called ‘nucleosomes’. Chromatin provides a dynamic regulatory foundation for the cell that is based on epigenetic features, which are fine-tuned to allow cellular specialization and adaptation. It has recently come to light that particular changes to the histones are common drivers of carcinogenesis and aging, indicating that these altered genomic proteins are genuine drug targets. As such, there is a precedence to discover histone/nucleosome-targeting compounds, which can be explored for the development of anti-cancer and anti-aging drugs, as well as biotechnological tools. This project is aimed at developing novel technologies for the discovery of site-selective histone-binding and nucleosome-modifying agents. The idea is to combine our cutting-edge chromatin methods with state-of-the-art biochemical/biophysical techniques for the screening and characterization of small molecule binding and impact on chromatin structure and dynamics.

Scope of duties

According to the Work Regulations of the Jagiellonian University Annex 1 to the Work Regulations of the Jagiellonian University – Model scopes of responsibilities and duties of academic teachers.
