Postdoctoral Researcher

Job position requirements (skills/languages/required experience)

The successful candidate will form part of the research team of ERC Starting Grant Project “Material Authority: Managing Mineral Abundance in Early Modern Japan” (MMA), under the supervision of Dr. Joshua Batts (PI). S/he will implement an independent line of research within the project’s stated goals and themes, and will coordinate with the team on collaborative work (an edited volume, joint articles) and activities (research seminar, paleaography and reading workshops, and an international conference).

Core Responsibilities and Requirements:

-Ability to conduct archival research using premodern Japanese sources.
-Develop a line of research in accordance with one of the project’s three core themes (Authority, Management, Exchange)
-Produce at least two peer-reviewed articles (or their equivalent) from this research.
-Take the lead on one of the projects core collaborative activities (a research seminar, sources workshop, and inernational conference) to be decided in collaboration with the PI.
-Contribute to the professional development and intellectual endeavours of the team. The PI will similarly commit to a concrete plan of professional development for the candidate.

37.000 € - 40.000 € Gross salary per year

Eligibility criteria

Candidates must have a terminal degree in a related field and be within 3 years of their PhD at the time of application. They should expect to reside in Barcelona for the duration of the contract, and be able to travel to Japan (or elsewhere) for archival and fieldwork. Must be able to conduct independent research in the required primary languages.

Selection process

Applications will be accepted until 20thJanuary.

Short-listed candidates will be asked to submit a longer research proposal and writing sample, within roughly one week of receiving the request to do so. Interviews of shortlisted candidates will be completed within approximately three weeks of the submission deadline. The start date is flexible, but is expected to be between 1 May and 1 October, 2026.
