Project title : Coastal wastewaters reuse for indirect drinking water production using innovative hybrid processes


Project acronym: OXYMORE


Total duration of the project: 18 months


Brief description of the project: The Oxymore project aims to evaluate and optimise hybrid processes combining ozone-based advanced oxidation processes with nanofiltration as tertiary wastewater treatment in coastal areas. The aim is to prove for the first time to public authorities, water management stakeholders and the scientific community that the ozone/nanofiltration combination is a safe, sustainable and economically acceptable solution for the indirect reuse of wastewater for drinking water in coastal areas (replenishment of dams or aquifers).


Main mission:

- Determining the best catalyst for the development of composite ceramic membranes for the treatment of coastal wastewater.

- Optimise the functional properties of ceramic membranes.

- Identify the synergistic effects between chemical oxidation and membrane rejection, particularly with regard to organic matter and ions.

- Minimise the formation of oxidation by-products, such as bromates and chlorates.

- Evaluate cleaning performance with ozone.


Definition of tasks to be accomplished:

- Preparation of catalysts: Preparation of catalytic nanomaterials using sol-gel type soft chemistry methods. The nanomaterials prepared will be characterised to assess their catalytic performance under batch conditions.

- Development of catalytic membranes: Development of multifunctional ceramic membranes suitable for the direct coupling of nanofiltration and heterogeneous catalytic ozonation.

- Optimisation of the hybrid process: Definition of optimal operational strategies for the treatment of real effluents from coastal wastewater treatment plants. The operational parameters of the new combined process will be identified and optimised to obtain the best treatment efficiency. Water quality will be monitored over time by monitoring global parameters such as chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological oxygen demand (BOD), DOC, SUVA, nitrogen compounds, significant ions, pH, etc.


Detailed description of the event or objective result determining the end of the contractual relationship, as well as the methods for evaluating and monitoring this result: delivery of proof of concept or scinetific publication / Evaluation : regular meetings


Position constraints: Experimental work with chemicals and oxidising gases


The net monthly salary is between €2,200 and €2,380

The contract duration is 18 months
