The pathogen Staphylococcus aureus is able to evade immune defenses by adopting an intracellular lifestyle, residing within both phagocytic and non-phagocytic cells. These intracellular niches contribute to persistent infections in tissues such as skin, soft tissue, or bone, where conventional antibiotics often prove ineffective due to reduced bacterial responsiveness (doi: 10.1038/s41467-020-15966-7).


This project seeks to investigate, at the single-cell level, how bacteria respond to antibiotic stress using in vitro models of intracellular infection.
