Description of the research subject :

The MIXAP-EU project (MIXed reality authoring APplications for and by teachers in EUrope) is a partnership of researchers and professionals aimed at supporting practising teachers in the creation of Mixed Reality (MR) activities for school education. It is composed of an interdisciplinary team of experts from French, Danish and Turkish partners and 30 pioneering practising teachers. The project has three main objectives:

1. Provide an overview of the best ways to use MR in schools based on the literature and on what the pioneering teachers in the project have done.

2. Produce an open-source creation tool that allows teachers to create customised MR activities. We are building on the first version of the MIXAP creation tool (https://mixap-lium.univ-lemans.fr/) by adding additional content and features.

3. Bring together an international community of teachers. The aim is to create a sustainable online research community through social media and a library of shareable activities.

Planning research project :

MIXAP-EU began in October 2024. We have already established partnerships and organised the first co-design session in June 2025 with 30 pioneering teachers in three countries. This first session enabled us to identify areas for improvement in the MIXAP application. We are currently working on the list of 25 features and bugs identified by the pioneer teachers. The aim of the next co-design sessions, scheduled for October to December 2025, will be to ensure that teachers are satisfied with these changes. The next stage of the project, scheduled for March to August 2026, is to set up a trial with these pioneering teachers in their classrooms. These trials will first be carried out with the 10 pioneering teachers in France, then replicated in the two other partner countries (Denmark and Turkey). This will be the main task of the postdoctoral researcher. These trials should provide us with insights into how to use RM for teaching, but also help us to improve MIXAP one last time before large-scale deployment. If the postdoctoral researcher is willing to stay for another year, the objective will then be to design and carry out a large-scale trial with more than 100 teachers using MIXAP.

Assigned activities and expected results :

• Design and conduct an experimental protocol to measure the impact of MIXAP on teaching and learning. We aim for a qualitative and quantitative analysis with questionnaires for teachers and students, focus groups, videos, usage logs, etc.

• Provide a list of improvements for MIXAP and related tools (tutorials, website, activity library, etc.) based on this analysis.

• Write scientific articles for conferences and journals.

• Write guides for teachers who wish to use RM in their classrooms.

• Communicate about the project by presenting MIXAP at local science fairs and events organised by the Ministry of Education or European associations.

• Lead online and face-to-face training sessions with various associations such as Canopé (France) and European Schoolnet.
