The DYNATERRE project contributes to the transition toward a circular economy by promoting earthen masonry construction, recognized for its low environmental impact and its ability to preserve local identity. However, the development of this material remains limited by the challenges of assessing its performance under dynamic loads, particularly in seismic areas, which complicates its insurance and certification. The project aims to design testing devices to better understand the mechanical behavior of earthen masonry, improve its thermo-hydro-mechanical properties, and integrate environmental requirements. The study also focuses on how design choices influence parameters used in seismic modeling according to the Eurocodes. DYNATERRE adopts a multi-scale approach—from raw materials to the global behavior of the building. It is based on collaboration between research institutes and industry partners, combining experimental and numerical expertise.
This position is part of the ANR DYNATERRE project, which focuses on the static and dynamic behavior of buildings with walls made of macroblock masonry. These blocks are composed of compacted stabilized earth, and the mechanical behavior of this non-conventional material has not yet been fully established. The task assigned to the laboratory is to determine the mechanical behavior of such masonry at the wall scale, particularly under lateral loading (pushover tests). The core of the work involves both the experimental behavior and the numerical modeling of these tests. A series of pushover tests will be carried out, during which the type of earth used, the slenderness, vertical load, and repeatability will be studied. In parallel, mechanical tests at the material scale, conducted by project partners, will be modeled using finite element methods (Cast3m software). These models will then be used to reproduce the behavior at the wall scale. Once validated, the pushover test simulations can be used to assess the lateral resistance of walls under various configurations. The work will also involve disseminating the results through publications in peer-reviewed journals.
